Looking to save money on diesel fuel? How does less than $1 per gallon? This system is just what you need!
$400 or best offer.
This system will filter your waste oil down to >1 micron. That's better than any fuel filter I have ever seen on any diesel engine.
If this system was...
So lets say I build this and it works well. Its running with enough turbo to blow in something like 50psi. What happens if one of the IP's fail on me? My assumtion is that the only thing is that I lose power, but only down to the level of what a single IP IDI would have. The excess boost...
Lol, one of many reasons I want 2 independent fuel injection systems. The engine will be able to run off either or both, so if one dies, the other is there to take up the slack.
I am playing with the idea of a stepper motor controlled by a simple microcontroller that monitors manifold pressure, throttle position, vehicle speed and EGT, that handles the second IP. For someone not familiar with basic electronics it may sound a bit pie-in-the-sky, but it's actually...
Mel,
I did some looking and realize that the glow plugs don't seem to have any threads in the precombustion cups, so assuming I can stuff a second injector into the head, I won't have to tap the inconel, just cast iron. Much easier!
You're saying that I won't have space to enlarge the...
In my experience, it shouldn't be an issue. My first personally owned diesel was a 1966 GMC Newlook (aka Fishbowl) transit bus with a 6V71 Detroit that started the same way, even in 0F, without a block heater... But it did take more cranking and sometimes a second ether pill.
My understanding is that the FSS kills fuel to part of the IP. If that's true, doesn't that mean the IP with the FSS turned off would be turning at half crank speed with no fuel circulating inside it, and therefore no lubrication, since the fuel flowing through the IP is the IP's lubricating...
Leeland, thank you for that. That's a lot like I'm going for, but with dual injectors as well. I expect dual injectors to give a more streetable engine and let me have more control over how long fuel is injected for. If I needed to, I could time it so the second IP didn't start injecting...
No, but there is enough of a selection of off-the-shelf gears and chain drives available that I shouldn't need to actually make any gears. A case to mount the pumps to and a chain drive is the direction I'm leaning towards. Simpler than gears and just as strong.
My hope is that both IP's can be turned down at idle enough to give a steady factory like idle. There will be a staggered or progressive throttle setup where both IP's feed idle fuel, then one IP will be increased to its full throttle position, but at roughly 40% pedal travel. Then the...
Dual IP with a twist - Help me brainstorm this out
My first experience with a diesel engine was in the Navy with the 12V71 Detroit 2 strokes. They have a dead simple and very elegant cold starting procedure.
1) Crank until you have at least 3 psi oil pressure, then stop cranking.
2)...
Wow riotwarrior, that's the best breakdown and explanation an engine I have ever seen! Thank you.
Based on that, its pretty clear to me that of I can build a 600hp IDI, it will still be a very reliable engine.
Its pretty clear that this engine has not been asked by many to live up to...
No, I'm sorry. I reject your reality and substitute my own. I can't agree that the newer designs could be better, no matter how true it is. No, my sliderule designed smoker is better. Unless we want to talk emissions. But if thats the case, I'll just stomp the throttle and drown you out...
