I just installed a used banks sidewinder turbo on my 89 f350 7.3. Im only getting1-4 lbs of boost. I installed the same setup on my 86 with a 6.9 and its night and day. Probably getting 13 lbs of boost on the 6.9. I have no muffler just a straight pipe to the front of the rear wheel. Is that too much restriction. Should i make it shorter. Does the fuel need to be turned up. Its the same system, whats wrong

Hm... Deja vu here... I'm pretty sure I saw this exact same post over on Fte about 5 minutes ago...

My response:
Fuel is needed. Exhaust won't matter enough to worry about; even with a stock muffler and full 2.25" exhaust it should spool fine.

And the question about how much to turn it up:

As far as you can. The turbo will handle more fuel(when spooled up) than a stock IP can provide, by about 50 RWHP.

Idk what happened to my response but I have the latest generation sidewinder kit and my ip is turned all the way up and still needs way more fuel. I only get a tiny bit of smoke when I gun it then it's gone but when my wastegate was hooked up it was hard to build boost and topped out around 6psi, I disconnected the wastegate and now it tops out at 13 and builds it quickly, I do have full 3 in straight pipe though

Thanks, what do you mean the turbo will handle more fuel than what a stock ip can handle. Are you saying the motor and ip cant handle the turbos full potential

The turbo will eat up more fuel than what the ip can output even when turned up all the way. I would head stud it if you plan on going over 10lbs also a pyrometer would be in your benefit

I have a pyrometer and wouldnt the 89 have the necessary studs for 10-13 lbs of boost. This is a 7.3

Turn the fuel up behind the ip cover on pass side. Sure it might last for a little while but if you plan to go over 10 lbs I'd stud it

Was it a 6.9 or 7.3? The 7.3s were a lot stronger

93 7.3 granted it did last over 2 years turbo and I wasn't too easy on it but not studding it was always a thought in the back of my mind.
