i can tell you with 100% certainty that 7.3 roller lifters are not the same as pontiac 347-455
on the left, 7.3L
on the right retro roller lifters for pontiac engines until 1977

Here's a pic I took of an enginetech lifter made in Mexico. Can't believe they are letting these roll out the door looking like that. Total crap. Got a set of sealed power lifters coming in a couple hours. Hopefully the quality is better than these ones.

Yes they were $65 apiece.

Just my luck, install new sealed power lifters and got truck fired up a couple hours ago and its still making ticking noise when hot. Engine sounds like a swiss watch when cold but as soon as I get the thing hot and work engine, back to that tapping sound that's most noticeable under truck towards front of engine. I can only notice this ticking noise at idle & operating temps, and its most noticeable when I put it in gear while idling. When its in park & there is no load on engine, I have a hard time hearing noise. I dont hear anything coming from exhaust or intake and tried using a stethescope all over the place with no luck pinpointing where its coming from. Very frustrating. Thinking about throwing the towel down for a while. This one has me completely stumped. Other than that, it runs good but am hesitant to keep running it like this.

Electric or mechanical fuel pump? Are you sure it's engine internal and not something in the accessory drive? Could it be coolant system related? Water pump? Alternator? New injectors and timed right so probably not fuel knock.

Just tossing some random ideas out there. Maybe it will jar something for you.

Engine has mechanical fuel pump. I put stethoscope on all belt driven accessories including fuel pump and didn't find anything. Don't know why I can't locate this one. It's a distinct noise that's easily heard.

Have you tried using a screwdriver to listen to the valve covers and other sheet metal? By using the screwdriver as a stethoscope you should be able to pin point where under the valve cover it is.

As a trouble shooting measure, when I'm hunting a noise I like to pull the belts off and see if it goes away. That positively eliminates the accessories.

Using an engine stethoscope. I will probably pull the belts and see if noise is still there.
Running delo 15w-40.
Would a bad harmonic balancer make a ticking noise?
