On the IP you have the two spade connections and then there is the one off to the other side of the pump that plugs into that little cylinder thing with what looks like a rod that moves in and out of it up against the throttle linkage. What is that things purpose? Mine never moves or makes contact with the throttle linkage.

on the left side is your high idle solenoid.
on the right, the one closest to the radiator is the FSS fuel shut off switch

the opther is a advance solenoid which is activated with the high idle solenoid.

both of the high idle and advance solenoid are used on cold start ups.
if yours is not working, check the connector at the coolant temp switch.
its located on the front of the passenger side block near the t-stat housing.

if its connected, you have either a bad switch, or a blown fuse, or wiring issues..

Oh I see. Not knowing what that was I went outside and started the truck up cold and it works just fine. I have only examined it with the engine being at operating temps. Thanks for the info man.

I thought we figured this out over the phone but guess not. If that plunger is not touching and pushing the throttle open during cold starts it is adjustable 2 ways. One way is to loosen the 2 bolts and slide the bracket towards the throttle and retighten. The other is to use a 1/4 inch socket on a 1/4 drive ratchet and turn the plunger out till it just touches the throttle with the engine off. Now please remember that solenoid is not strong enough to open the throttle on a cold start so we press down the throttle peddle after the ignition is switched on. Otherwise the solenoid can and will burn out trying to overcome the throttle spring.

Yup, if the solenoid burns out, there only $190 if you can find one.

Well the one on my truck has been working fine cause every day you can hear it back off the rpms once its been fired up for a few minutes. I'm going to play it safe and not touch the damn thing. 190.00 for that thing is ridiculous. Just out of curiosity how will the truck run with out it? Like you said (if you can find one). I dont plan on messing with mine I just wanted to know what it is but if it goes out?

As Gary said. On a cold start it holds the throttle open to around 950 to a 1000 RPM until the pass side head gets to 120*F, then de-energizes, and the RPM goes back to 650 RPM or whatever you have the idle set at. I've posted this alot of times.

As far as I know, unplugging the advance / high idle doesn't hurt anything, it'll just take a little longer to warm up. Mine sounds like an angry jackhammer above 1500rpm if the advance is still on, so I unplugged it and I haven't noticed any negative effects.
