Hewy guys, this is a littel offshoot from my main thread of the 4wd conversion, I am starting bare, base ground up wiring of my truck, and I will use this thread ot post only electricla questions pertaining to my build. I got EZ wiring mini 20 wiring kit which will help alot. My questions will involve idi specific wiring.

First off, the starter: where do the wires go? I know the main fat lug is the power to the starter from the batteries. Ther eis alot a little lug that has a smaller 14 gauge or so wire on it, does that go to the starter solenoid on the fender? Ill get some pics later to help out with my vague descriptions.

Thanks all in advance!

2nd question- cold advance/high idle. I beleive the sensor responsible for this is behind the thermostat housing on the passenger side head. How is this wired into the IP cold advance solenoid?

the first question i can help you with.
yup, thats the starter signal wire. mine is a 10 gauge wire. goes to the solenoid lug closest to the battery.

this has always baffels me, because there are 2 solenoids in this system.
one on the passenger fnder, and one on the starter itself.

on older ford gassers, there is only the 0 gauge wire comming from the solenoid to the starter.
im thinking diesels use this due to the glow plugs.

Its a switch, not a sensor. The switch is on the passengers side head with two male spades on it.
One side has keyed 12v, the other goes to the high idle/Advance solenoids.

Red is keyed 12v, blue is switched 12v.

Yes.
The FSS, cold idle, and cold advance are actually all ran off of one wire (keyed 12v, hot with key on). IIRC they were soldered together and then had a crimped steel ring holding them together.
When I redid mine I just cut out that section of harness and reused it. IIRC they use ~10A all together.
My wires are all the same color, I know its a NoNo, but it was a quick job and is still better than the factory setup imo.

i see one runs to the high idle solenoid, where is the cold advance solenoid located?
Also can I get a new one of those switches? Pretty sure mine is stuck in the ON position.

The cold advance is the back male spade on the injection pump.
Im sure you can get a new switch, it looks like this

I think the switch turns off at ~120*F.

This thread might be a little help in understanding all that too.

http://www.oilburners.net/forums/sh...RMO-add-on-Anyone-done-this-something-similar

I haven't done it to mine yet for obvious reasons, but it is planned in the initial phase of wiring. I'll probably do it slightly differnt than he did but, hey, I just gotta be me. My thing is I never know if the wife or someone else (probably my dad) would have to drive the thing so most mods I make need to be a stock and user transparent as possible. Its real simple.

"a device that detects or senses heat, light, sound, motion, etc., and then reacts to it in a particular way"
I guess you're technically correct but I have always used "switch" to describe something that only turns on and off (ex: Thermostatic switch, oil pressure dummy light switch, ac pressure switch, etc). I googled the part number for what we are talking about, and Id say 90% of sites call it a switch, Ford and international do too.
I use sender/sensor to describe something that actually sends a signal to a computer, gauge, etc.

Dont believe me? Call your local international dealer and ask them what the definition of 1803082c2 is.
Or Ford and ask for E8TZ-9E939-A.

I did it this way too. I was rewiring everything when converting from gas, so it was just as easy putting them on their own switches. Glad I did. Cold start advance doesn't get used a whole lot, but I use the high idle all of the time.
