Just wondering how much I could "legally" tow with my 1991 F350 crew cab dually. 7.3with a sidewinder, moose pump, ZF5, 4.10. Have the plates in the bed and am looking at buying this gooseneck for $2500 to haul my scout, or 2 or 3.... :Dcookoo;Sweet

As long as you don't go over 25K GCW. That F350 will pull it nicely.

If the trailer has electric brakes, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I recall hearing that GCWR is based more on engine horsepower than on braking capabilities, because the people who came up with the number assumed that the trailer has brakes that are capable of bring it to a complete stop...and looking at a owner's manual confirms that; the GCWR's based on the power train, not the truck weight rating (i.e. braking capability). The owner's manual also states that most trailers weighing over 1500 lbs are required to have a braking system, FWIW. (I admit this was news to me).

The owner's manual says that your GCWR's 12K if you have 3.55's, or 14K if you have 4.10's, or 17K if you have 5.13's. BTW, those numbers are 11.5K, 16K, and 26K for 460 trucks cookoo

With that said, you might want to check the laws in your state...I know that, in CA, if you're towing a trailer that weighs over 10K lbs, you need a Class A CDL...

As to legality...as long as the trailer brakes are in good working order, and as long as the tongue weight doesn't bring the truck over GVWR/GAWR and the trailer's not over its GVWR, you should be good ;Sweet

how much does the trailer weight? the registration for my gooseneck says it weights 4500lbs, my play truck probably weights in at 5500lbs.. my truck struggles a little off the line with the stock 3.55 gears is all.. trucks holds the weight great even with coolers, tools, gear, and a 4wheeler..

Legal wise I believe the answer is you can add your trailer gross weight to your truck gross weight limit (pobably your limit for your registration not the truck) and that is what you can legally tow. I guy who teaches CDL classes told me that so take it for what it's worth. So if it is a 12k trailer and you have 10k registration on your truck, you are legal to 22k. I don't know if there are any restrictions relating to the vehicle. I assume that there is a qualifier that says you can't exceed your vehicle tow rating but I don't know that. Of course all the caveats apply where you have to have the right hitch and equipment and the tongue weight. ^^^^ All good points Warden.

Thanks for the info guys. Getting my CDL so there won't be an issue there. Not sure on the weight but I'll find out. They are 6000 lb axles each with electric brakes. I hope that I can at least haul 2 scouts. Mine weighs 6000 and they usually are between 4500-5500. I think the dually weighs 6000, it's got rear helpers and air bags too.

i would look to see how much tongue weight that trailer will be when loaded and see where that would put you with the truck... combined load on an F350 is only 11,000 lbs basically. the most you can register an F350 is 11k.

I think if I shift the load around just right I'll be ok. Like put the lighter one over my truck and the heavy one over the trailer axle backwards.

a couple of thoughts. first, the limit of the trailer is 14k. my best WAG is the number of axles. if it is an 8 lug axle, the gross on each axle would be 7k each with a combined total of 14k. that is well within your reality of a IDI. you definitely need to consider numerically higher rear gears. 4.56 and 5.13 are ideal gears when towing above 10k/lbs. i've done it for years with my f450's naturally aspirated. you do pay a penalty of reduced top speed, but you throttle pinned to the floor all day and the motor won't complain.

They are both 8 lug the one is new and the sticker on it says 6000 lbs. I like my 4.10s but I guess I'll see how she handles it and go from there. Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately they won't sell her. But she's got a 345 with a 5 speed and 2 speed rear. Probably tops out at 10 mpg at 45 mph.... Lol

If you were rolling down hill empty....:D
With a tail wind... :D

The 304/345/392's a very stout engine for a g@$$er, but fuel economy's NOT one of their strong points...even in a pickup truck or Scout running empty, one would be considered lucky to get 10 mpg out of one
