CDR vs RDT

1993 F350 CCLB. 7.3 IDIT. Banks sidewinder. Turbo stays FULL of oil even after cleaning and changing the CDR. What are the pros vs cons of a CDR vs RDT?

The main issue with a road draft tube is that, wherever it exits, you're going to have blow-by gases...people will give you a weird look and/or try to tell you that your truck's on fire. Also, if the tube is routed anywhere in front of the cab, you're going to get a (IMHO) unpleasant smell.

The other problem is, if you size the hose too small or too long, you risk pressurizing the crankcase, which can lead to leaks (most notably out the front and rear main seals, but can also come from elsewhere).

I've been running an RDT for almost 8 years now...the smell's annoying and I plan to route the tube into the exhaust at some point to mask the smoke (I get unpleasant reactions from treehuggers on a regular basis around here), but IMHO it's worth it to keep the oil out of the turbo/intake...

I used the Banks crankcase vent adapter...you remove the oil filler tube on a 6.9l (or the IP timing gear center cover on a 7.3l) and it bolts in place, with the filler tube going on outside of it. I have a couple of pics of the adapter...IIRC the nipple's 1"; I got the cheapest 1" hose I could find and ran it from there to a spot under the rear of the cab. I was planning to do a RDT-into-exhaust mod even then, so I ran the hose with that in mind. Unfortunately, I've been so busy that I didn't have time to finish it, and now I'm waiting until I take my truck out of service.

I think my hose is 6 or 7 feet long, but I really don't remember...and, honestly, I think it may be too long if you don't route the RDT into the exhaust. OTOH, before I put this in, I tried running a breathing oil filler cap and ended up with some nasty leaks...I'm not sure if they never sealed themselves from this or if I may be in an overpressure situation now.

I've got mine running from the Banks adaptor to a 1-1/4 piece of electrical conduit along the frame rail. It exits jsut below the rear axle.

I like that idea...do you have any issues with leaks and whatnot?

Hmm...I'm starting to get ideas (and that's not necessarily a good thing LOL ) ...

What harm does a little oil in the intake do compared to spewing it all over the ground and dealing with a blowby chimney under the truck?

I also have a Banks equipped truck, 1st Gen. turbo and just had toe fix a leak on the turbo drain after an overhaul (engine and turbo). Turned out one of the clamps on that short section of hose that connects the two sections of metal pipe had loosened up. Real **** to get to but no more leakee for me.

The oil all over the turbo plumbing is a mess. If you IC, it effects the efficiency of the IC tremendously.

just go to autozone get one of the cheap chrome push in breathers take it apart from the bottom and remove all the foam packing...fill it with stainless steel wool...no oil in the turbo and no mess or smell of a rdt

I need to do something with mine. I suspect my turbo is sucking oil through the CDR. Ive changed it twice and there's still a ton of oil in my intake.

When you went from a CDR to a RDT, did you notice it using less oil? Mine uses oil, but only when its running...

The early valley pan gaskets were made with a baffle on the underside to deflect oil and only enable crankcase depression thru the CDR. If a turbo has been added without replacing the valley pan and the turbo oil is returned there, the oil cannot drain fast enough, holes had to be punched in the baffle to correct this. When factory turbo's were added, the valley pan has holes in the baffle for drainage, all later valley pans have the holes.

Would you have to do this with a banks setup? is there a way to tell if the turbo isnt draining fast enough?
