I'm going to start stock piling engines now, all you RPM-heads are gonna need them! :) The rotating mass of these engines is massive as well, yet I've not heard one thing about it in all the RPM talks. We used to balance engines at the machine shop and I'd just cringe to start on one of these! To my knowledge, we never did one, I know I didn't, and maybe they were really close "right out of the box" but I'm doubting it. You are also adding to the windage and such as you start spinning all that mass more RPM's. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying I see a future market for some engine parts.

Just going to a lighter, stronger piston will do wonders, but there's no need to go there unless you have a horrid case of leadfoot. I've driven my own trucks for business, so that has kinda tempered me a lot. Everything can be done by 3800-4000 rpms.

my newest truck only spins 3300 what a bummer, my one i sold would spin 3700

and my dads 7.3 will spin 38-39oo all day and sometimes creep up to 4ish:sly 4000 is when i just starts to get fun im going to break 4000 rpm in a stock motor and find out how long she holds

If the hp and torque curves are the same between the gasser and the diesel, because of the higher compression ratio and the energy in the fuel, the diesel will outperform it. Think of it as a 10 to 1 compression gas motor going against a 21 to 1 gas motor, if you could find a high enough octane fuel to make it run.

You can build a diesel to spin that fast; the pullers do that all the time, I think Double Overtime with that mechano Stroke takes his motor to 7000rpms in a pull :eek: and 1800hp.

ameristar1, your quote says it all. If that motor made 1800 at 7k 1000 at 3.5k might be possible and we are only asking 300hp at 3-3500rpm in a street setup.
Should be ok, lets hope the cam and a little tweaking is the ticket.

I just dont know if the cam is going to be the big ticket gainer for these engines. I can see some gains, but 50hp? I guess we will find out ;Sweet looking forward to a new cam in my truck.

You know we are going in careful with this, and so you know, 50 hp is nothing. The whole deal gets tied together with the fuel, turbo and tuning. Just be patient.

Should be ok, lets hope the cam and a little tweaking is the ticket.

Most of the high hp street trucks do the number at under 3500 or so rpms, but they have the structure to take the abuse. We don't have to talk about the Cummins or the Duramax. But if an IDI can do 1hp/ci at the wheels and live, I'd say job well done.

We'll have to get dyoung to be the stress tester for new connecting rods and crankshafts.;p

I know I'm just saying we all should know that at first, if we get gains (which we will) from a cam, its not going to be the holy grail for these IDI's until we can get other components figured out. I think out of the box if we can develop a good cam, or heck even from riding in Russ's truck, a good cam should be able to add 10-20hp I would think. 10-20hp is a good increase for these trucks, definatly enough to feel ;Sweet.

The cranks are already forged. Is there something more that can be done to make them even stronger?

Deep cryotreating is a proven process, not just for the stuff that moves, but moreso for the stuff that shouldn't move, like the block and heads. Most reciprocating part failures start when the block starts to move around, things get out of line and bang! there goes the crank.
Aside of that, a crank specialist can give more insight.

Hmm, heard of cryo hardening for crankshafts but didn't realize it could be done for castings as well. Hardened block......:sly

www.300below.com Click on the link, and you can see what can be done. For some reason piston pins can't be done, but talk to them to confirm that. A proper motor needs to have the whole engine done, especially a 6.9/7.3 which is kinda notorious for block flex when the pressure gets laid to her.

Truth is I don't think you need to really harden anything beyond stock for 300Hp at the crank. I highly doubt my truck is making 250 at the crank and its already a bit of a handful when empty. When loaded, its "adequate".

So Justin, Russ's truck is really that much faster than yours?
