Noise abatement?

Like @hce i really enjoyed the “sound deadener showdown” website and info.

I think sound like to travel up. So with your good seals, I’d prioritize firewall, inside and out. Then floor, then doors, then ceiling. I might choose doors before floor, but not before firewall.

The rodents are so bad here, that I had to remove every hood mat I have. Doesn’t matter if I use mothballs, or peppermint.

I need 6-toed cats

I had a six toed cat! The old wives tale is true, mousing SOB! Move out of California, no rats here. Just snow, lots of freak'in snow. But the three weeks of summer are awesome!

One question I have about the mat is does it cause corrosion under it. I live in Northern Michigan and this truck will see occasional use in the winter? [salt] rubber floors will be reinstalled.

Are those factory seats? My truck has army seats and I am looking for alternatives.

That's exactly why I want to do the butyl rubber & foil on the floor & firewall, there was water coming in from a few bodywork related issues & there would always be some dampness stuck beneath the rubber floor mat. I figure having the butyl rubber & foil pads will keep water away from the metal if it seeps in again at some point.

One thing to consider is making sure to extend the floor mat all the way to the outside edge of the door jam, that way water can't pool in the "gutter" in the inner rocker/floor pan... where the electrical wires are tucked in.

Seats are out of a Vovlo I think... things some previous owners do for whatever reason. I'd love to get me some junkyard King Ranch seats, those are very comfy.

The most comfortable seats I ever owned were in my XC70. Ranch King seats would not be good in a single cab, backs are too thick. Seats used to be cheap, but DAMN!

I ordered some 200 mil butyl/foil from Vevor. $38 for 36 square feet. I will check it out, price is cheap enough that I could do two layers and still save a ton. Ordered a side window to check out quality, if its good I will buy more. I used their Diesel heater in my last rig and never had a problem, bought one for this one too.

Ya, I figured on taking the sill plate off and running it out to the edge of that. My 2018 I bought a one piece Weathertech that crosses the tunnel and extend out onto the sill plate but they don't make one for this old beast.

My roof is cut out like yours but it is double layer fiberglass with a fuse panel for all the lights in there. I have the same exact switch panel on the dash with lighted switches. I'm using the siren circuit for the Hella 9000's on the front and the emergency light circuit for the back up camera.

This thread is perfect timing for me. Pulled my cab apart and am putting in new sound deadening, padding and carpet right now.

Not to change the subject, but how to clean the walls and floor before applying the sound deadening? Can I pressure wash the back half of my supercab? I was thinking of removing my speakers and giving it the once over. There's 30 something years of grime, spilled soft drinks and such back in there.

Anyone ever tried that?

Seams like just I washed it with a bucket of water and dish soap. Did my rx7 without the mass backing was very disappointed with the results on my truck I ordered carpet with mass backing.

That would probably work. You can use acetone to make extra sure that it's really clean.

Good point, I'll have to figure something out, maybe just re-upholster them eventually.

I also have a diesel heater on the list, I want to put it underneath the bunk, in the storage compartment and do a bit of duct work

You're lucky, my hotshot conversion was done by a New Brunswick farmer back in the 90s... way too much bondo was used, there was also plywood & wood screws involved in mounting the sleeper to the cab before I revised that

Not 100% sold on pressure washing, you could get water stuck in-between panels. I second the dish soap idea followed by acetone right before sticking on the panels.

Well, I ended up going for it with the power washer and had a pond in there! Sorry didn't take any pics of it with the water rolling out the doors, but it worked great

I let it dry for a part of a sunny day and started in on the sound deadener. I got about 3/4 of the way with 36 sq/ft. and found some extra sheets of Dyanmat a friend had left over. I will say the amazon chinese stuff is way easier to work with than the Dynamat. The foil skin is way thinner and flexible. Seems like it deadens the sound exactly the same, but takes about 1/4 the time to put in.

Anyway will let you know how it all goes when I get the carpet and pad all in. Pretty fun to have it almost as quiet now even without the pad, carpet or door panels and head liner. This sound deadener stuff is pretty incredible.

I may dig into doing this soon.
I also need to repair/replace my seatbelt retractor. I tired to take off the body plastics to get at it but I bailed out for fear of breaking it. Any advice on getting that piece off would be greatly appreciated.

It’s tougher material then you think, I would buy new outer door seal also and do it at the same time.

Just another suggestion, I'd cut out the cab mount trap door & expose the bolt head in the back before you lay the carpet down, it could save you a headache if you ever have to swap out the mounts.

Besides that, it's a beautiful job!
