I have always been a Dodge/Cummins man and except for a 97 OBS PSD, I have exclusively owned a Cummins powered truck. Yesterday, I bought a 2001 Crew Cab F250 4x4, 7.3L PSD with only 52,000 on it. The truck belonged to my neighbor (89 yrs old) who passed away. The truck has absolutely every option available and has never pulled anything or spent the night out of the garage. I love the room on the inside of the Ford and in my opinion the truck itself is much better than the Dodge trucks I have been driving. It rides better, handles better, and does not have the wind noise that my 2010 Dodge has. My question is: How does the 7.3 stack up to the Cummins from a reliability standpoint?

7.3L stroke is generally thought of as a 300k+ motor if maintained.

ive have a few over 250k
only one that went bad was at 290ish the thrust bearings went on the crank but I believe that was due to when the trans went at some piont in time.

Are you the guy that your Dad has the Oil Tank cleaning business? Was there in Casper in November and delivered a 33 Ford coupe body. You know the routine about keeping all the lube changes for longevity of that PSD, should last forever. If it has the 4R100, check the TC nuts (6) if you get a rattle around the tranny.

I know we are talkin PSD's here, but the 7.3 IDI wa built with all the same strengths as the PSD...I got 315000 MILES on mine (over 500 000 kilometers) and it still runs as strong as EVER!

Let this be a guide as to how long a PSD will run.

I know you can have issues with any engine. The last Dodge I had (2009) had to have two engines before 80,000. I never had anything but trouble with it. I bought the Ford mainly because of the condition and the room that it has. I love the Cummins but am not a big fan of the Dodge truck.

365,000miles on my idi 7.3.
My neighbour has a 2001 or something 7.3 PSD with 1.2million (kilometers) on the clock. Routine lube changes gave him minimal injector issues and a motor that still runs well. Gone through 3 tranniesLOL

I still think the 6.9 idi will out live any domestic diesel with re-torqued head bolts when required and good fuel and oil. Bring it on cummins!!!!

Any motor can have problem but I have a buddy with 400K plus on his and he don't drive it easy. Also I've worked on an international with the 444 and it had over 9000 hours when the injectors needed changed out but now it runs great again

Super Duty air boxs are poorly designed and kill a lot of 7.3's. Check that it seals good and the box is not worn or broken and there are no dirt tracks in the top cover.

Only 145,000 miles (243,000 km) on the odo but she's running like a top. I can actually hear and feel the need for fresh rotella oil changes at 5,000 miles. I'm looking forward to at least 300,000 miles out of this ol girl. You made a good choice from the sounds of it. Enjoy.
