Its just like everything else, if you do it wrong, it probably wont work right. I have used a gasket several times with no leaks, but under ideal conditions, silicone (used correctly of course) is the best way.
And I second ultra grey, slightly more viscous than black (stays put better). I have used the grey from international, and it is better than ultra grey though it can be slighty thick at times.
