turn signal switch

So I went to hit my right turn signal on yesterday and the damn thing wont stay on unless I hold it.
Are these things still even made for an old vehicle like this? Are they hard to replace? This kinda gets into an area that I havent really fooled with before as far as steering columns go. Thanks

You should be able to get one at a regular parts place I just replace a neutral safety switch at work on a 70 Malibu and they had it in stock

yes they are still available, i would get one from NAPA or someplace better than advance or autozone. they seem to be really cheap plastic that does not hold up. it can be a bit of a job depending on what you are used to. its been years since i did one but you have to remove the steering wheel and fish the harness down through the column. then you have to plug it in under the dash. some uncomfortable positions may be involved for that.

It is a little more involved if you have a tilting column, but just a matter of a little extra time and effort. The wires have to be removed from the plug, since it (the plug) will not fit through the tilt mechanism. Take the time to make a drawing of the location of each wire in the plug and you will have no problem.

There is a significant difference between the tilt and non-tilt signal switches, so make sure to order the correct one.

There is a piece that goes on the front of the switch that keeps it actuated(the cancel cam) and it used to be available in the HELP! section of the auto store.

After the 3rd switch failure in my truck, having one even catch fire, all new replacements coming across the counter at the Ford garage in Ford boxes, I removed that wimpy mess from the column and installed an externally mounted Signal Stat signal switch; this was sometime in the late 1980s.

It is way up there on my list of favorite modifications.


I love the fact that it is NON-cancelling and stays in the position I put it until I want it OFF.

Plus, it is capable of handling over twenty bulbs per direction, whereas the factory one is not up to handling the few that came on the truck.

We used to use these in our old Crown school buses, they held up well.

Thanks for the help, I'd like to fix it before I head up to Reno in a couple weeks.
I'll pull the wheel off tomorrow and see whats going on with it.
