How is it lubricated ? Does the trans pump fluid to it ? (E4od). My truck likes to eat transfer cases... Not sure why.

The 94?
That's the BW1356, mine eats them like candy. Lol and I don't even wheel or anything.

It has a pump inside on the main shaft. They're known to cause issues and need to be addressed. Couple ways to skin the cat. Lol

Another common thing seems to be the range fork pads.

Yep the 94. I'm honestly not that ******* it. At least I'm not the only one going through them. :D

Thanks Jasper.

But I'm not complaining too much. $100 at the junkyard every couple years isn't too bad. Lol

I think I'll rebuild one next time, might last longer than the junkyard ones.

Look up how to stake the oil pump in. That's the most common issue. The oil pump is just sitting between an aluminum boss to stop it from rotating. Well they wiggle and wear it away slowing the pump to move and stop pumping, burning up the case

When it eats transfer cases what is happening? Im pretty severe on my trucks and have only smoked one over many years and it was because it ran out of fluid. While offroading many miles a leak got much worse than I noticed and ran dry . Are you replacing with jy cases or rebuilds? If the oiler doesn't get loose like Cory said and it doesn't run low on oil should be a very slow death. Wrong oil? Should be atf. Are you breaking cases? Thats a whole different discussion.

For me, when I got my truck, that one only had low range. Shift fork pads fell off.
Next one would start grinding when I let of the pedal. Got to the point on Accel would sometimes grind. Haven't torn it down yet. This one was a slow leaker, case had a crack. Might have been ran slightly low.
In another truck, I had one also start grinding on accel. I'm thinking the shift fork pads.

Man, now I'm a little worried about putting the 1356 from the bronco on the Enterprise for a 4x4 swap. I have a 1345 in Bruiser and it's been worked hard with no issues. Neither one has a slip yoke output though. My 1345 just has the yoke and the BKO 1356 has a flange.

Yep. And in the process the rubber supply hose will splint and the pump will suck air. Thought I had a pic of one torn down with a split hose but apparently it's gone.

Don't worry, they are all just old now. People just swap in another junk yard one that usually has a quarter million miles on it and is half full of gear oil every time the one they have wears out. Nothing wrong with that but you gotta adjust your expectations. At least most if not all parts are available and not that expensive to rebuild it. Probably leaks anyway so split it rebuild it and seal it up and i doubt you will have a problem for a very long time. I think if you unbolt the flange a slip yolk will slide right on. If you want to know if it has problems take a look, they are pretty simple and it will be obvious if the pump is working on the case or the hose is split. Im paranoid about tcase problems because its one of the only things that ever truly incapacitated me in an idi. Still limped in four low to a random garage on a friday afternoon far from home. Guy found me a used one and had it swapped before closing time. That was probably 8 years ago.

Don't worry about it. They're easy to change. Lol

As preventative maintenance. I would say pop one open, do the pump mods, and shift fork pads.

Has anyone ever heard of a way to make sure they don't drop out?
I once saw a guy talking about making some out of oil impregnated bronze.
