2.8L VM Motori (Italian company; Detroit Diesel owns stake- formerly Penske) used extensively in Europe. Only sold in US 2005 and 2006. You will have to do a solid axle swap.

Why can't US automakers build us a 4-cyl turbo diesel???


I have always wanted to do a VW 1.9TDI in a LWB Samurai. In fact, I have a Toyota transmission and t-case doubler set up in my shed awaiting the day it happens. If anything ever happens to my CRD I WILL put this motor in a TJ or a Sammi.

you dont want a IH idi or anything of that size or weight, you will need stiff springs to hod it up and you will lose any real fex you might of had. The mercedies diesel is probably the best deal, you can find them cheap, they are reliable as hell and have decent power for a small truck

The little 5 cylinder Mercedes should do the trick just fine 4 would probably be kind of slow with 35s, they got a bad reputation because of the automatics behind them from the factory, 5 speed and smile

But a mid engine IDI would make an interesting rig

I think a Bronco II with an IDI would be pretty cool!! I don't know how the frame, front springs or the little ttb would like it though. It would have no problem keeping the front wheels on the ground!
