I personally think you are making much too big a deal out of it.
As much as I have overloaded singles AND duals, I have never had a
bearing problem in anything that had a modicum of maintenance.
Don't know if I would recommend anyone else doing some of the stuff
I have done, but in this particular instance, I would do it in a heartbeat.
One reason; extra rubber on the ground.
Another: safety of having the other tire hold you up after losing a tire.
Another: less sidewall give (translates into less sway).
Properly lubed, bearings are tough animals.
