I understand what you mean by setting the "arrow" in the block. Honestly how the thermostat actually sits in the block means nothing but.. YOU MUST have the copper pill pointing down into the block or it wont see and hot coolant so it wont open. Those three slots have nothing to do with placement in the block. The coolant flow is out from the top of the engine and returns back into the top of the radiator. Hopefully all this is not confusing. Also this forum has found that ONLY the actual Motorcraft thermostat will work correctly. There are plenty of after market thermostats that fit but can't pass enough coolant to keep our engines reuuning cool pulling a load. Our factory thermostat begins to open at 192 degrees and is fully open at 212 degrees.
