Swapping out a NP208

I have a 1985 6.9 IDI with a factory NP208, it an NP205 from an earlier model Ford a direct swap, other than the crossmember?

Also what is involved in replacing the speedometer drive gear in the NP208?

no i have an 86 f350 4x4 with the np208 also, and mine was a factory big block 460! Im not sure why ford chose the np208.

As far as the np205 goes, there are many different spline counts. Count them and count the ones on your 208 and most of all the bolt pattern to mount it.

If the 205 came from a ford, you're good to go. With exception to the latest NV gearboxes on the superdutys, all ford tcases are the same bolt pattern and spline count.

Wow, even better. So the question is how would you make the light that comes on in the dash work when you shift it into 4x work with the 205?


Are all the ford 205's the same? Even if it came out of an f150 not 250 etc?

So if i get an np205 off of a late 70s bronco, would i need the adapter that came on the bronco too? he has all the shifter etc.
What should i get of of it?

you will need to cut a notch in the adaptor for the rear shift rail, you will also need to make new drivelines because the 208 is probably a slip yoke and most 205" are fixed. you can try the adaptor from the doner, but check the length because there were different ones. they are both 31 spline inputs and the 205 will be 32 spline on the outputs. and yes get the shifter unless you plan on twin sticks, then you shoudnt need them.

So even if it get the shifter assembly out of the 79 bronco and everyhting that was connected to the transfer case ill still have to notch the adapter? Which adapter are we talking about?

So what should i grab out of the bronco?

if you get the adapt. from the doner with the 205 it will allready have the notch. does the bronco have the same trans as you?

edit: i would get everything from the adapt. back, incuding the drivelines if possable.

Which leads me to me next question. Where can i get upgrades to my drivetrain that are bolt in? What is the biggest size ford put in as far as u joints back then?

What are the biggest regular greasable joints i can put in 1410? 1450?

The cummins im putting in will have 230 hp and around 600ftlbs torque so it'll need some beef.

I there a crossmember I can use for the NP205 that will bolt in from another Ford? The adapter just has to be notched for the T-case shifter to clear?
