if its an EFI motor it could be the electric clutch that helps keep the distrib. in time. the computer help keep the motor in time by advancing or retarding the time by using that electric clutch. also it could be the gear cog at the end of the distributor. weill need to know more info about what kind of engine it is before further diagnosis.

the gear on the end of the dist that meets the cam took a crap.
They kinda sorta broke and meshed themselves in a weird way that makes it hard to get the dist out. (also why your timing sucks).

Get a helper, get a pry bar, get a rachet on the crank. Pry up on dist while helper turns engine one way than the other.

somewhere,ma
most likely just corroded.doesnt take much to sieze a distributor in the block.next time spray the crap out of it with penetrating oil and let it soak.lightly tap on the dist. to loosen it.a couple light taps on the vacuum advance can will loosen them.
