Strange noise coming from front end of 2wd when NOT braking.

I have a strange noise coming from the front end of my 2wd truck. It sounds somewhat like a front end with alot of play in it, where it shakes and thuds when going over bumps in the road through town, however, it only occurs when I am NOT braking. With the slightest pressure on the brake pedal, the noise goes away entirely, and comes right back when I let off. I don't even have to push the brakes hard enough for them to engage, just enough to move the pedal mere millimeters.

The noise I am hearing is not a pulsing of any kind. The bearings appear to be good and the wheels spin freely with no grinding. The brakes also seem to be good. This info is being relayed to me from the guy who looked it over last Friday while replacing a the parking brake cables for me over the holiday.

Is this issue something to do with the breaks, or am I needing a front end alignment?

Probably your calipers are loose. If you have the type with the two metal pieces with the rubber inbetween, the store has new ones.

If you jack the front up and take the tires off, grab the caliper and try to move it. It should not move at all.

I worked on a dually f350, and the guy was complaining about a noise up front. I took the front pass side tire off, and the caliper fell off and was hanging by the hose. The wheel was the only thing holding it in place, the little keepers had left the scene.

Have a look at the front frame horns, especially the rivets on the front cross member, the OBS trucks are notorious for making some popping noises in the 2wd trucks, Type4 has some recent pics of how to weld things up and make them more quiet.

Be leery of work you are not paying for. Jack up the truck and check everything for yourself, as loose wheel bearings can make similar symptoms. It should be easy to diagnose.
