Some help here???????

Hello all,
I just picked up an 88 F350 with the 7.3 IDI in it. When I'm driving down the road it smokes blue smoke and makes a popping noise out the exhuast. It also smells like its running rich. Also when it sits and idles, it just hazes smoke. I was just wandering if this could be the injection pump getting weak. I'm not sure though so hopefully someone has an idea. Thanks

My 6.9 does the same thing (except the popping), even with a rebuilt IP and injectors. Im figuring that its the valve seals, I just dont feel like pulling it apart till I have to. Does your truck burn a lot of oil. I burn about a qt every 200 miles.

Ok thanks. Mine doesn't use that much oil yet, it uses about a qt a month.

i would pull the injectors and have them pop tested

And do a compression test, might have one cylinder not up to par.

does it have a turbo? There was another member with similar problems and it turns out the filter sponge had gotten sucked into the inlet for the turbo.

My old motor always smoked like crazy and made a weird noise till it warmed up then it didnt do it, when i ripped it down i found 1 cylinder that had the rings stuck

My truck did the EXACT same thing when I picked it up. New injectors cleaned up the blue smoke, and advancing the timing got rid of the exhaust popping.

Thanks for everyones help. I will check it out now that I know what to look at. Also, mine is N/A 7.3 idi.
