Sealing water necks

I took off the lower water neck that hooks my block to the lower rad to sneak the oil cooler out the front. I couldn't see any seal on there, so I put it back on with a thin bit of rtv black on there. It ain't leaking yet. Is there supposed to be a seal?

Ain't leaking, don't need fixing.

Yeah, there is a gasket for the thing, but like stated above.......... if silicone is doing the job, I'd leave it be.

I'm fine leaving it. Not a drip at all. But I am certain there was no gasket under it. When I removed it, I looked immediately, figuring I'd have to make a trip into town to buy one before putting it together. But there was nothing, and it didn't leak beforehand either.
