sounds like metal on metal. i'm guessing it's the driver's side wheel bearings. good thing i have a spare vehicle. how hard is this to change? is it a hub assembly like on GMs?
check the brake pads.most pads have a warning tab on them that will squeel like a pig when it contacts the rotors telling you that it is time for brakes.some metallic pads will just start squeeling for no apparant reason but usually only when applying the brakes.
usually when a wheel bearing goes south they make a grinding or whirring noise while driveing.
Follow the article in 95_strokers post. It's real easy. You might need the yellow O ring Ford part # F81Z-4A322-AA about 3bucks at the stealer. Pick up the studs while you are there.
