Removing oil pan

Anyone removed one from a 6.9 with the motor still in, and trans and all that still in? What all did you have to do to get it to come out? Just curious.

you have to unbolt the motor and lift a little bit to sneek it out it is a bit@#

Unbolt the motor mount's, then lift or jack it up as high as it will go and support it with lumber under the motor mount's. The oil pump stick's down into the pan about 9 inches. Naturally you have to disconnect the exhaust. If you have a turbo on it then that's another story.

Drain the oil and take the filter off, otherwise it get's a little sloppy.

When you replace it, seal it with RTV Copper, don't try to use a gasket, most time's they will leak if you do. put a small bead of RTV on and let set up over nite, then put a fresh smear on it and let it setup until a skin forms just before re-installing. Apply a little RTV by the front and rear main seals where the pan meets them.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think in the time since my original post, I'm going to bag that idea and pull it completely. Long story short is this motor has had a bent rod, from the ingestion of water (by the previous owner) and I started driving it regular here recently (after my blue one started sucking coolant.) Today it stuck a rod through the oil pan, most likely number 6 since that was the one with low compression. I contemplated pulling the pan and replacing the rod and bearing and piston if needed...but the more I think about it, it'd never be right. Naturally the crank is probably rough, as well as the cylinder. So I'll pull the motor and go from there. Plus pulling the motor sounds way more easier

Thats really too bad you windowed the motor.... I bought a motor that the owner said had high miles on it and thats the only reason he replaced it..... Seems he did plenty of driving to and from Mexico where he lived... Turned out he threw a rod on number 5 and covered up the small hole in the pan rail... It was easily repairable and for just $78.50 I had a good rebuildable motor core... But thats not the point. The Basta** lied to me... These motors are tuff. You may find its saveable like I did. Otherwise its scrape...
