So....when you get your A/C system done the evac the system to get all the moisture out. Basically they pull a vacuum on it.

Would it be totally crazy to use a stock vacuum pump, rig it up so that it has the right hose end on it (might be hard?), and use it to evac the system?

Making the hose would be a real PITA, but, would it work ? Vacuum pumps can be had cheap at a pick and pull, and those fancy electric ones are at least $100. And I'm almost willing to bet that a stock vacuum pump idling would pull a faster vacuum.

Basically just have a spare vacuum pump laying around, with the right hose on it. Swap it on, which takes 5 minutes. Connect hose, and let the truck idle for half hour maybe an hour. Take the hose off, and whabam, there you have it.

dont think it would pull low enough vacuum. a/c shoudl be brought down as low as possible, normally 28-29lbs. 30 is a perfect vacuum, but never achived.

I thought a good pump will pull around 26 mmHg? Oh well just a thought .

Nope... Wont draw enough vacuum but.... Find any refrigerater or water cooler. Remove the refrigent pump and solder on the fitting you need. Those little pumps pull around 29 inches of vacuum. They wont pull absolute at 29.9 inches but they get very close.... Any refer repair shop has them laying around everywhere. They are cheap too. Probably Less than $25.00

I Didnt pull a vacum in my 86 or my step dads 94 psd and they both blow cold as ice, my girl friend always turns mine off cause she says its too cold

+1 on what Gary said. I have a ****** pump I got from a board member on the other site back in 2004...been working like a charm ever since

And, for those of you who don't pull a vacuum...it may work for a while, and may even work well...but, you're risking the moisture you didn't get out of the system, getting in the low-pressure side, freezing up and blocking the line, and back-pressuring through the system and causing a blow-out (either the relief valve or a weak O-ring). Learned this one the hard way
