Hey All,
Is this an indication of return lines, Also somone told me that when replacing return lines the longer ya take at replacing them say take off one day install the next the harder it will be to get the air out and start ?
Having never replaced return lines o-rings & caps how long of a job is it ?

If it is just at startup, it sounds like a cold engine to me. Mine bows a big puff and then light steady at startup and for the first minute or so afterwards. I think that's pretty normal - or at least I hope so.....

Please fill out a signature, so we know what your driving/working on.

Yes, bad return lines can cause smoke in the AM. Does it stutter/miss when you first start?

Ok Updated user profile, Can't seem to get photo small enough to post ?
Anyway, Doesn't shutter or miss at start up, At times after it has been run hard..pulling my trailer it will have a slight miss when ya come to a stop light and every now and again I will get a hint of a diesel smell in cab when stoped at a light, The truck has very low miled 40K , every thing is original, It does run like a top, A little disapointed in power when pulling the trailer, 25' 6k lbs
return lines , injectors ? Any ideas,
Thanks,
Bill

How long does the wait to start light stay on for? Could be a bad glow plug.

What kind of speeds are you pulling on upgrades when your towing hat your disappointed in?. On my truck i pulled 15k up the Adirondack mountains at 45MPH and it does not have a turbo. At that time it had about 120k miles.

RE

I can pull a 3-5% grade at 40-45 mph , EGT's reaching 11K to 1100 deg F
Wait to start light about 10 sec at most, It starts right up and runs fine, I did have the IP timed about a year ago or so, I'm kinda wondering even though it has very low milage but all original that maybe I need injectors & return lines, The truck sat more than it was driven, I've replaced all fluids & filter's, It is like new, My buddy's GMC 6.0 gaser can pull the hills better than me, Just seems like it should have a little more pulling power,
Thanks,

You added one detail in your second post that changed my mind. You said you smell a little diesel in the cab. That indeed sounds like leaking return lines. If it is weeping fuel - enough for you to smell in the cab - then it is sucking in even more air as gravity tries to drain the fuel fuel back to the tank when it isn't running.

Changing caps & o-rings isn't a tough job and doesn't take that long. Get a kit and assemble all the parts to replace one whole side at a time looking at yours as a template. Get a dental pick to help with getting the o-rings out of the grooves in the injectors. When removing them from an injector, remove the bottom one first - it will roll smoothly over the upper groove and o-ring that way. When putting the new o-rings on, put the top one into its groove first then do the bottom one. This way the bottom one will roll smoothly over the top groove and o-ring.

Once you've replaced all o-rings on the 4 injectors on one side, start with the two middle injector caps and work toward the ends. Lube the inside of the caps with some diesel or a slight film of vaseline. Once you finish one side, do the other.

The whole job takes one to two hours depending on how quick you are.....
