Power surge

the other day I took a trip down south, after the truck running for about 2.5 hours and 75 miles (truck sat idling for a while). Well anyways as I was cruising home at 65ish the truck was humming along well then suddenly the truck felt like I was hit in the ass with a gust of wind, it was like I hit a power band the truck. When this surge hit is sounded like the rmp's lowered and gained power. this only lasted about 2 seconds then went back to normal. In a span of 125 miles and 4 hours this happened two or three times. other than that the truck was fine, any Ideas?

sometimes right before I run out of fuel, the truck does as you are describing. I'm thinking air is somehow getting in your system, whether the tank is running dry or you have a leak somewhere I dont know.

thank you, Im want ing to say it happened while not on a level surface...any other ideas?

Usually this happens when you run low on fuel or air gets pumped into the injection pump. The air changes the timing and you get a feeling of an extra two cylinders added to your V8 engine.... How old is the fuel lift pump or the fuel filter.... This happens when the tanks get down to the last 1/4 tank... The fuel pickups break off and you run out at 1/4 tank.. Upon refilling the tank you only get around 12 gallons to fill up the tank... The rear is 17 and the front is 19 gallons...

Well I have had the truck about 8 months. its my "green project" (by green I mean a truck I can fuel without costing me much). I need to drop the tanks so I can check the pickups however maybe I should just throw in an extra fuel pump. I have a plan for an LA run this summer thats 450mi each way.

Only the rear tank needs to be dropped to work on the fuel pickup... If you drop the rear tank first cut loose the supply and return lines on the frame cross member. If you don't dropping the tank low enough to reach the lines at the tank are mostly impossible and they can break off... I learned this the hard way too.... The front tank can be reached easy. Just use a fleahlite to see the ring that retains the sender pickup in the tank. Knock it loose and just lift out the sender. Watch for the alignment tabs on both senders... Otherwise you can't install them when your done working on them.... The rear tank will be tuff to handle when you drop it because of the fuel left in it... Its hard to balance fluid that sloshes around plus... the more fuel the heavier it is.....
