well i got my 12 valve and im gonna put some aftermarket stuff on it. im gonna go with a diamond eye performance 4" exhaust but which is better turbo back or turbo back straight pipe. Also gonna get an air filter but dunno which one to go with any suggestions. Also an air and exhaust manifold any suggestions on those. any cheap sellers of this stuff let me know because that stuff can get a lil pricy.

First off, what year 12v did you get? Is it auto or 5-speed. If auto, know this...the more power you put to the trans, the quicker it takes a $h!t. I wouldn't spend money on big exhaust unless the current 3" pipes are rotting out. A stock 3" exhaust with the muffler removed (straight pipe) will flow pretty well. Of course bigger is usually better in exhaust, but unless your pushing over 350HP with the engine, larger diameter exhaust is not neccessary. Biggest improvement will be a different profile fuel plate if you have the p-7100 pump. A BHAF is also a good adder. Here are part numbers for the air filter.
BHAF Part Numbers
Fleetgaurd # AH19037
Wix # 42790
Napa # 2790
Carquest # 87790
Donaldson # B105006
Baldwin # PA2820
John Deere # PMAH19037
Big A # 93790
CATERPILLAR# 3I0005
FLEETRITE # AHR819037
HASTINGS # AF1012
LUBER-FINER# LAF2531

Enjoy

yeah its an automatic and its a 97

Good year, bad trans. With enough money poured into it, it can be a good trans. You can still improve HP, as long as you dont beat the truck. I would suggest the air filter and straight pipe exhaust. If you want to do a fuel plate, take out the stock and grind it to a new profile. I have an auto in my 98, and I ground my plate to a #100 profile. The power is there if you want it:D just use wisely.
You can also back off the spring pressure on the star wheel, which is under the big hex plug on the afc housing(top of the injection pump). Basically gives more fuel at low boost, smoke maker.
Here are the plate profiles.
