oops...stupid me..

OK, in a rush to drive my truck since its running again, I got started welding a exhaust hanger to the frame. I forgot about removing the battery cables. Now my tail lights stay on even with the key off and lights off. What do you supposed happened?

I have never unhooked a battery to weld on a vehicle, never had a problem.

Like the other guys, the welding is a red herring, look under the dash at the pedal switch.

I pulled the wires off the brake switch cause that's what I thought. The lights stayed on also or will it do that. Yeah I pulled up on the brake pedal...no different...

Is it the brake or tail light that has power, or both? Test the contacts in the bulb socket if not sure. If it's tails then it could be the headlight switch...I've seen them do strange things.
Does it have trailer wiring? Maybe the heat cooked a wire where the trailer harness ties in to brake lights?


Just brainstorming.

Shouldn't be any hot wire's back there unless you have a trailer hitch and a battery charge wire for a trailer. A welding spark could have burned into and shorted the wire's. Disconnecting the Negative battery cable is only done on trucks with electronics on them.

How very, true this statement is. My headlight switch problem which I thought had fixed itself bit me in the ass at the worst possible time in the back woods of Maine. When I got home I changed that switch and it ain't really fixed yet until I put in the relay. <-- note to self.

Well since we're on this topic....

A friend of mine just bought a brand new 2015 power stroke. He's making it into his new pipeline welding rig. He has cut the inner fenders out of the factory bed, welded in a 10 gauge sheet for his floor, built boxes on each side for welding gas cylinders, a box in the back set down in the floor for welding leads (cut out the rear crossmember and tied it into the box) built a set of running boards with 2" sq tubing and 12 gauge tread plate, and a bunch of other smaller details.

Now Get A Load Of This:

He has never unhooked the battery cables!!!

I was shocked (no pun intended) to say the very least!!

question....
if you have rubber engine mounts, a rubber trans mount, and ridiged exhaust, i can only speculate that youll be going through this again.
when i do my own exhaust hangers, i isolate them with sway bar bushings.
things gotta have some kind of vibration dampening, right?
dont feed your truck after midnight...
