As you all read CG dads 2000 7.3 had a rusted out oil pan and I know of 2 others, and I checked mine the other day and it is rusted as well but not rusted threw.
The question is this a common problem, and has anyone else seen this problem? It is kinda sad when a oil pan rust out in 4 to 5 years

My BIL's '99 has the same problem, but hopefully my repainted '02 won't have the same.

Yes this is a common problem, especially in salty areas. Both of my trucks 96, 00 had to have them replaced.

From what I understand, common problem.

Common solution is to keep an eye on it, and paint or coat as needed.

Here is a TSB on the problem.

Issue

Some vehicles equipped with the 7.3l Diesel Engine may
exhibit engine oil pan corrosion when operated in high salt
content/corrosive environments.

Action

Inspect the oil pan. If corrosion is detected, use Motorcraft
High Temp Anti-Corrosion Coating part number PM-13-A to service. Refer
to the following Service Information for details.

Service Information

Clean the oil pan off with a solvent to remove any dirt and oil.
Using a 3" angle grinder with a 36 grit disc, grind off all loose
corrosion. Blow off with air. Wash the pan with soap and water and let
dry. Brush the anti-corrosion coating on the oil pan. Allow to
dry fully before operating the vehicle.

Parts Information

PM-13-A...........Motorcraft High Temp Anti-Corrosion Coating

if rusted through, is this covered by the 100000 mile engine warranty or is it covered by the 3 year corrosion warranty?
mine is a 2000 with large rust bubbles on the pan 80000 miles and five year mark in 2 months.

I am sure it would be covered under the 100,000 it is going to cost you a $100 but the question is does it have to be rusted through before they replace it. Would hate to pay the $100 just for them to sand and coat like mentioned above

Whether it gets replaced or not probably depends on a couple of things, like how bad the rust damage is and the actual dealer itself. Some dealers are lot better to work with and will warranty things that others might not.

For any folks out of warranty or choose to do your own anyways, POR makes a great product that will take the abuse & stay on a oil pan - It will just about hold oil in a rotted out pan with holes if prepped right.

POR 15's website

Cheers

Thanks for the info Mastertech.
Is this cheap pan a IH or Ford part?

97-UP
Navistar # = 1830837C91
Ford # =F7TZ6675BBB
Same exact part made by whoever makes Navistars oil pans not sure if that is inhouse or outsourced.

We will be offering on the later 7.3 pans pre-coated with POR or Rhino-lined in the near future. ;Really

Have to see how they both hold up on the test vehciles first...
