what oil filter are you running? the one for an idi or one for a powerstroke? add more till it is full. mine normally takes right around 11.5 to be att he full line.

I don't measure quarts or anything like that.

What I do is fill my filter to the top. and install it ith a LIGHT coat on the gasket.

Then I take the 20 L pail (5 gallon bucket) and start pouring it in. Once I reach the FULL mark on my stick, I fire the truck up and run it a couple minutes. Shut it down, and clean up your tools. Put them away and give the oil a chance to filter back down to your oil pan.

Check the stick again and add a little if needed.

Your oil filter will hold a little oil from the pan as it will have air in it. Once it is run the first time it will take a little extra to fill it and all the oil passages that hold oil when the engine is off. This is normal.

Now, with that said. You might not be able to keep it on the full mark. I kow if I fill mine to the full mark and drive it, i willgo down one quart in about 500 miles...and stay there. It don' usually go any lower, but if I add that quart again it will blow it out or burn it off. Yours might do this, or it might be fine.

i do put alil bit of oil around the ring on the filter and put some in it nbefore i put the filter on the truck

ive added a quart so theres 11 quarts in now drove her about 3 miles and let her idle for awhile but the dipstick is still bone dry doesnt like to go in and pops at the end like its exting somthin and the tip will get bent sideways

maybe this is dumb. but on mine there is a joint on the dipstick tube down by the ex. manifold and at one point I noticed the same problem and checking further I found the dipstick was slipping by and hanging in mid air, I think somebody got lazy and cut the tube when they changed the engine (not me) just thought I would throw that out there

Coulda gave out after being bent a few times too. Or maybe the vibration wobble was enough ? (doubt it but hey)
