Hey all I'm in contact again with the owner of a F350 1994 IDI turbo. It's still a e4od and its a ball joint dana 60 but it's cleaner, Obs body style and already has a turbo.

Would a early 94 e4od be the upgraded version?

Factory Turbo crush pipe but I have that new turbo..

Ball joint 60. I Have mixed feelings. Never had a BJ 60 failure in a work truck.

200k Instead of 145k On my current brick nose.

salem.craigslist.org/cto/3384692404.html

So are the differences worth it? Price would be $3000 and I'd sell my brick for $3k less front bumper and winch.

One owner grandpa truck also but not worked as hard.

When I was reading about e40Ds, it seemed that 95 and up was the years to look for.
Baumann says:
"If it becomes necessary to overhaul your E4OD transmission, you should perform as many updates as possible if it is a pre-1995 unit. E4OD component updates include, as an example, the following items:

Improved (thicker) converter clutch piston (circa 1994), prevents the formation of cracks which relieve fluid pressure from the apply side of the clutch, causing it to slip and even bluing the outside surface of the torque converter in extreme cases. Ensure that your new converter contains an updated OEM or "LuK" brand heavy-duty clutch. This can be difficult, as many torque converter suppliers and remanufacturers may not use this new style of clutch.
Higher displacement front pump (for 1995) provides more fluid capacity for faster engagement of reverse and greater lube flow.
New (for 1994) 4-pinion overdrive planet and input shaft assemblies replace older 3 and 4 pinion units which tend to develop cracks in the carrier under heavy loads.
Center support update kit (for units built from 1989 through part of 1994) replaces wear-prone bushing with a ball bearing and contains a new overdrive stub shaft.
Stronger overdrive clutch cylinder snap ring which will not dislodge.
Revised sun gear and rear case bushings (circa 1992 model year) provide longer wear life and better lubrication.
4 pinion planet carriers (first used in 1992 model year)
New forward clutch friction plates with hardened internal splines cure "chatter" and "no-drive" conditions in E4OD and some later C-6 transmissions."

What's the whoopdie doo with king pin D-60s? Running 44s? Rock crawling? Bah! I think king pin D-60s are great for trucks that shouldn't be street driven. For a work truck with a minimum of maintenance, they're beyond overkill. Kind of like my friend who had a Cherokee he put a D-60 in the rear. Why? ford 9 inch with 31 spline axles would have been more than enough for anything he was willing to drive on and he would have kept a little ground clearance. There's nothing wrong with overkill for overkill's sake. But I wouldn't shy away from a ball joint front axle. At least it won't have my D-50 under there LOL

I'd say it's worth 3k. Looks very nice. Altho the E4OD is a time bomb with that many miles.

As far a BJ vs KP. KP are perferred as they will take a lot more abuse before they wear out vs BJs. I don't see it as a reason to question buying a truck tho. It's still a D60!

Yes the one thing about kingpin 60s.. you can wear them out and deal with the hopping/death wobble and always know it will not come apart. With Ball joints you will be in there The next day doing R&R so you can live another day haha. I like how BJ 60s turn a tiny bit sharper. 94 would still have smaller brakes. 92+ 10.25 rear a little different?

I would still convert it to zf5 later on. Anyone notice the f250 heavy duty tailgate on the f350?

So a factory Turbo downpipe.. its squashed right? Will I be able to install a updated housing and downpipe without body modification or am I going to smash the firewall again to make room?

Easier to put a inter cooler in a OBS truck?

Serp belt on engine.

More options for a winch bumper?

I would not trade my brick for nothing else part reason is my first truck. Second they ARE the best looking IDI IMHO. Now with that said I would sell any other brick nose I would have to buy an obs. After my 93 drw I wouldnt go back it's perfect. The wires an all is a better lay out a bit newer an in alot better shape. Parts in dash to front clip space the awsome. Maybe cause mine is in really really great shape. But there nicer I think. Also slant nose guys I like them alot to but wouldn't own one unless it was mint.

I really like my 89 crewcab. Being 2wd makes it easier to work on under it. I would like to have the next upgrade done to the dash but towcat told me they are always breaking from stress cracks. I don't want it that bad so I wont be changing it out. A dually with 4.11 gears would be great but thats not really a need item... Just purely for looks. I realize how it would ride differantly if I used the rear springs from a duall so I would not be doing that. Just run the springs that came with the srw rig.. Or invest in a new set of custom made springs. With nearly 400,000 miles on these oem springs I feel they have done their job very well and it might be time to retire them from faithfull service. Converting to a dually requires a bed, differancial,6 wheels and just maybe a driveshaft adjustment depending on what length pinnion length I get in the dirrecancial. Then I would need a sticker on my forehead reminding me I have a dually when I try to buy rear brake shoes or parts... Also knowing the year might help too. I think I'll put this on my bucket list.... Its not a hafeto item.. Its a wanto item and nothing more. OBS or bricknose... I'll keep what I have but like all of them too..

My truck was stored under cover so it has a almost perfect dash. I can believe that towcat said they crack faster as the top is a softer different material.

Rear axles are the same, I haven't noticed a difference in turning between the two. ANd what do you mean by smaller brakes? And why would you touch R&P if you had death wobble??

Rear axle is the same but uses sensor for speedo.. only difference? I was thinking of the 10.5 in 99+ being different.

I didn't say R&P.. R&R.. work.. fixing.

Im not 100% on brakes. Bolt on calipers started in 92 or 94? On BJ 60 axles.

Anyone know if my Ramsey bumper will bolt onto a OBS

Actually, I didn't notice that you were talking 4x4, mine is 2wd. I use the new posts button when on the site so I just went off you question about the calipers and missed the D60 part, lol. I could be wrong on the 4x being 95 when they went bolt on calipers then. But I am sure that's when they changed the 2wd to bolt on.

I know where an OBS truck with a 60 sits and I am biding my time until I can get my hands on it to convert mine or maybe bring that one back to life. I would rather have a kp version but beggars can't be choosers I guess!
