So I have decided that this truck is worth keeping and that it can do more than what I ask of it. Finally got to tow a real load behind it (15k gooseneck) and with a load like that, it is much stronger than my 2500HD 6.0 was, and holds speed on hills much better than my buddies 03 PSD (according to him).

So, I have some new parts ready for it.....

Picked this combo up for $350:

pump retails online for $400 and tank is $579. I plan on welding a bung into it and making it a working tank. 103gallons.

the first thing I noticed when towing that 15k trailer is the brakes on this thing suck! Nowhere near as nice as my 2500hd was.

so I got this:

I will probably also upgrade to 97 beams on the front.

got a CB in it:

08 tundra seats:

after I finish some body work, it will be ready for new lights/markers and paint.

If you dont have one you should invest in a GOOD trailer brake controller, having brakes on the trailer makes a world of difference in stopping power, the truck alone will not like stopping 15k attached to the already 6000 pounds that the truck itself weighs

my controller is still in my 2500hd, and I agree that I need one for 15k, but even so, my 2500hd would stop 15k without trailer brakes without an issue.

Even with just the 5k in axles I had on the bed I could feel it pushing the truck. Rear drums must go.

The 2500 HD will probly always out stop the old ford the old trucks just arent up to date with the newer trucks, but with trailer brakes and all new brakes on the ford you will be just fine

And you truck is comming along nicely, i really like your gauges, I would do something along this lines but its too expensive for me,

So im swapping in an 89 model interior

what did you do about a fuel sending unit?

That must be one strong 6.9l to feel stronger than a 6.0PSD, I drive both and to Me they are worlds apart.
If You are going to tow a lot I would think twice about installing that rear disc brake kit, every one has their preference but for Me there is nothing like good brake shoes to stop a big load (and of course a good trailer brake), I pulled loads with almost every option ford has to offer from 83 6.9 IDI until the 6.0psd and not only form a maintenance point of view but to Me it feels better with a good set of brake shoes.
Truck looks nice.
Just My 0.2c.

probably right, because I cant get a rotor quite as big as whats on the chevy, but only 1/2" difference. I will have 4wheel discs and hydroboost.
Rotors are rear 96 E350 rotors, and calipers are 87 3/4ton 8600lb chevy's.

thanks, stock sending unit.

Empty there is no contest, the empty 6.0 is MUCH faster, after around 45-50mph, but the auto trans is also much nicer for speed than a ZF5.

The reason he determined my 6.9 to be stronger with a load was towing that 15k (his trailer). There is a bridge in Lake Charles that is about 1/3 mile long I would say and approx 7% grade. He said on this hill he has to pretty much mash the gas and he slows down to around 50-55mph, I was able to hold 66-68mph, recorded on my GPS speedo. Foot on the floor, EGT's around 1150-1200, holding 17-18psi.

Also interesting on the brakes, I love my 4w discs on my 2500hd, and when I converted my 92 F250 to rear discs it made a pretty significant difference.

dead on, but it bounces around below about 1/2 tank, sending unit itself is worn out.

I also got walbro pickups, for when I open the tank... replace that crappy stock pickup.

Mine when i fill the tank stays on full for ever then falls fast hits almost empty comes back to 3/4 then falls to 1/4 then back to 1/2 then hits empty then comes to about a 1/4 tank then it finally bottoms out at empty, then i notice the truck start surging i pull the sending unit and has around 1/8 of tank left so i guess my pickup tube isnt low enough either, but my fuel sending unit is complete trash

I have no problem stopping a 15k trailer with a hydrobooster and brakes that are up to *****. Ive got brake controllers for the trailer but Ive been kinda busy and havent been able to put it on.

Before the hydro boost swap I could barely stop the truck. Now I have no problem locking up 305s on dry pavement.

Pm me if you are looking for a hydrobooster, I have one ford unit left and a couple of chevy units.
