new mech temp gauges..where to connect

Hi Everyone,

I am slowly learning more and more about these trucks. I have read it is a great idea to add aftermarket gauges to be sure about temp and pressure. The previous owner already installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge, so I am going to add a mechanical water temp gauge.

My questions is where to install the sender for the temp gauge? Thanks for the help.

Some remove the extra plug in the water pump, others remove the factory gauge sending unit in the front of the dside head. I did both. I removed the factory idiot gauge sender, put it in the water pump and put my electronic gauge sender in the head. The head should give the most accurate reading and that is where most gauge manufacturers recommend they be installed. Personally, looking at the non-functioning gauge in the dash drove me crazy, so I found a bushing and installed the factory gauge sender there just for my sanity!!!

I am not sure what truck/motor you have, mine is a 1987 6.9.

stock temp guage was crap.

temp sending units for 83-94 are in the block under the AC unit for the guage, and in front of the drivers side exhaust manifold for the light.

I put mine where the emergency temp light sender use to be, that is the driver side head. I believe that is the most accurate reading.
