new guy in ny with a stuck 4x4 shifter and ...

hey guys great forum
1st i got the truck i bought going with much help from this forum, so thanks
the truck is a 92 f350 7.3 non turbo, i will put some pics up soon.she needs some body work and paint being a new york truck

4x4 shifter will not move into 4 high
linkage is all good, nothing cracked, bit of rust. but i can only move the shifter 1/4" or so. i sprayed with pb blaster. but is there anything else i should look at
is it ok to have someone pull the shifter and tap the linkage a bit, or is that asking for trouble

also, how hard to change the key cylinder in a tilt wheel standard, key still works
can i just follow what i got off here and put a screwdriver in the detent pull out and replace, is it that easy?

I would NOT go hitting the shifter. You are just looking to break it. Take it out of the truck and work it free then have a read

is it the plunger inside the housing, where the rubber boots are, that gets hung up or is it the linkage?

Here is a better pic of another one i fixed.

It actually gets froze in 2 spots. Where the linkage bolts to the steel t-case bracket it seizes and will not pivot. And also the "plunger" in side the cast aluminum seizes and will not move up and down to allow you by the detent. Both places there is a grease fitting, they seize

im gonna try taking the boots off while on the truck and see if i can get it freed up before winter, then take apart next year and put the greese fittings in.

If it wont go into 4hi, it is stuck at the pivot where the big torx bolt is in the pic, you could pop the linkage loose (chock wheels, set brake) and see if the linkage is whats stuck or if its in the transfer case, but it's most likely the linkage.

ok, i got the bolts broke loose to remove the shift unit

but i am having some trouble removing the plastic bushing on the linkage to get the unit out of the truck, see pic

i dont want to pry to hard, is there something i am missing or just use force

i thought that would be the easy part

can you buy just the plastic bushing, if i grind it out? or do i need to make one

guys were rite, froze up at the pivot point, when i get it out i will put the grease fittings in

hopefully it will go into 4x4 when all installed again

I would NOT pry on it. Spray w your choice of lube and use channel locks to get it off, by putting the lower jaw on the steel linkage and the top jaw on the pin that the bushing goes on. When you squeeze the pliers it will act like a puller

mine only moves up about 1/4'' to 4 hi to...it seems to work. its 4lo i have problems getting into

i may have been overstating a bit with 1/4",

now that i got it apart, i see that it follows a certain shift pattern

i guess it wouldnt even budge, because at a 1/4" movement you would be in
4h

im gonna put the greese fittings in and give her a whirl

were starting to get some wet snow here in upstste ny, and i live on a big hill

fingers crossed 4x4 works

by the way, the ignition cylinder was a breeze

I took my shifter linkage apart, Blasted adn gre3ased everything. Seems to move much easier with longer thrw now.

i cut the pin so you don't have to push/pull whatever nonsense. just grab it and throw it where you need it!
