Need advice engine knock/detonation

Hi folks my 1985 ford f250 has a serious problem
It started detonating or knocking very bad
Im at a loss and dont have any diesel tools
I replaced all injectors and glo plugs
The truck was just starting to rundecent and now this

There is no way tge truck will drive the hilly dustance to a diesel shop
What should i do and where to start?

Were the injectors new that you installed. This problem sounds like an injector knock. What happens is an injector will start leaking or poping open early. That allows fuel injected very early in the compression stroke. Kinda like advancing the timing in a gas engine on a few cylinders. How many miles are on the injection pump and the fuel filter. If the pump is of unknown mileage you may have stressed a failing pump with newer injectors that pop at a higher pop pressure than what you took out. Lots of possibilitys here... Don't give up. This forum can help make it right..

The injectors were new from napa
They say BWD on the box im thinking Borg Werner Diesel?
I did save the old Delpi injectors
The pump is of unkown age
Fule filter is new but the fule in it was verry dirty when i bleed the air, i was driving home from napa (new fuel filter) when the knock started
I had to drive home in2nd gear at low throttle to keep it from sounding very bad
What should i be looking for at?

Fill the fuel filter with some atf then run it a couple minutes then turn it off and let it sit for a day before restarting.

How is your oil level?

No techie here but the only time I have ever heard a knocking type noise that just doesn't sound right was an injector which hit all of a sudden and went away for quite a while after an atf soak, and the truck being low on oil.

The oil is black as night but i did check it right before start and it was full
Could i have damaged an injector with very old fuel (the fuel could have been up to ten years old)
Can injectors be reuilt
Can one test an injextor at home?

Ten year old fuel was probably wet from absorbing moisture, was this a garage truck or in the yard? The yearly cycle brings a good bit of moisture too.

Injectors can be rebuilt, usually the old injector is a 'core' and you buy another that was rebuilt and send the old one.

You could test the injector at home if you had an injector tester. Some people make them out of fuel line, a gauge, and a bottle jack

To add to that one tank had no cap

How to hook the hard line to the jack?


Is there a way to test the lift pump at home?
The oil shows no sign of water and the coolent is nice and green

Do these trucks have a fuel water trap and if so where and how can it be checked?

the 7.3 does not sure on the 6.9. You can try to isolate the knock by putting a stethiscope or screwdriver on each injector and listening for a difference in noise. youll know when you find it. Also you can loosen each nut above the injector one at a time and see if the knocking stops. if it does it is that injector that is bad

Also my injectors seem to tick slightly if I dont use some sort of additive in the fuel. Does not seem to care what kind it is.

I just looked and the tank im running is the one with the new fuel cap , that tank also has the very old fuel

You might have some gasolene in the diesel tanks. My thoughts are dump the fuel in either tank and run fresh fuel thats been trated with a agle killer. The fuel is your biggest problem at this time but it may have caused other issues too. Just fix one thing at a time for now. Fuel first. then we can advise on the possible other issues if they come up...

This was a clean jar before I hit the key and pumped into it.

Second jar doesn't look near as bad as the first. Like icanfixall said, get some new fuel in the lines and see what happens. You may be due for another new fuel filter, too.

If you get the old fuel out of the tank, you may be able to filter it and still use it. Diesel does not really have a shelf life like gasoline, it just collects dirt, water and algae. Get those out and you can probably run the 10 year old fuel without further incident.
