Most important thing is to pull cool outside air rather than hot engine compartment air. Not sure if the later trucks have the intake in/behind the grille but on my '86 it makes a noticeable difference in EGT with the large hose connected to the factory fresh air intake in the grille. My truck is very EGT limited when towing, every little bit helps.
