Here are pics of my recently-bought-from International t-stat. Looks like the "one on the left."

Buy and install only the motorcraft thermostat. Others will fit but will not pass enough coolant to cool our engines. A robertsaw is not what we use no matter what some sales guy tells you. The part number for the ford item is E5TZ-8574-C or RT-1049... Nothing else is correct.

So, Gary, you're saying my International part is not correct?

I do notice that it doesn't have the small rattling piece I've seen in previous units.

Nope... Didn't say that at all. What you have from international is the same as what ford sells. It just has a differant part number and package. That copper pill will has 192 printed in it. So does the ford units. These start to open at 192 degrees plus or minus 1 or 2 degrees. They are fully open at 212 degrees.

WHEW! Please remember the strength and authority you have over us newbies, Gary, who will read your posts literally, to the letter. ;)

And, yeah, I'm a bit edgy. Engine's been out for over a month. Miss my 7.3 music. :(

Hopefully, at least back in, on Tuesday.

So what is the rubber surrounding the t-stat body supposed to do? I found a bit of that floating in the top of my radiator tank the other day. I knew what is was from right away because I replaced the old thermostat last fall with a new Motorcraft one. The rubber on the old one was cracked and deteriorating.

I have a correct Motorcraft T-stat, but I'm still not sure if it's working correct... My water temp gauge usually sits right at about 184-188 driving around. That seems awfully cold to me. Shouldn't I be running closer to 200 all the time? Seems like it would be better for the engine if I did...

The rubber that surrounds the factory thermostats is the seal on it. The metal to metal seal was not felt to be good enough so the rubber was designed to seal off the opening. I cut that part of the rubber off my thermostats so I get more flow thru the thermostats. When I read a post I read every word of it. Then I do the best I can to answer the post. I make every attempt to give a proven reason for what I post. If I don't have an answer then I don't give one. Truth is power or vice versa. Also the more information we have the more power we have to make an informed decission on buying ot doing something. Please remember something ... I once didn't know much about these diesel engines just like many new members just starting out here. Some great members here and over at another site helped me along... I was not born knowing all that I do.... I picked it up traveling thru over 13,000 posts here. And I'm still picking up new to me stuff about these engines and trucks all the time... Its still exciting too. Some might recall the three articles in Diesel Power Magazine about me.. The first one was shocking to me... I had no idea it was going to be in there. What I did was meet with Jason Thompson. He and I had lunch and talked about these trucks and engines. He looked over my truck and took some pics. Next thing I knew was someone here mentioned that we had a cieleb in our rants. So reading about this cieleb I finally figured it was me... Really a surprise too. I don't feel I'm a celib at all. It others that feel that way. I really look up to many of the true greats on this forum. So many of them have done much more than I have. As an example look at what Mel is doing.. Now theres a great guy doing all he can for us. Those that choose to not like or support him are just ... "other people"......

This is what happens to the Robertshaw thermostats.

They are too tall, so they jam against the recirc block off port in the engine, and destroy themselves. After a while they get jammed and do not open/close at all.

This is what happened to the black truck. it ran perpetually cold when I bought it. Sometimes it would overheat with very little effort...

Motorcraft thermostats are the only thermostats to use...

Gary was that a typo or did I get the wrong one?

The label on the T-stat I picked up from the dealer says: E5TZ 8575 C not 8574 like you stated... The RT1049 is the same. Just want to make sure I got the right one ;Sweet

the one on the right,,was originally made by robertshaw thermostats.. whic has been bought out, some time ago..... i believe,,theres only one stat manu in america,,and most are junk....when robertshaw made the one on the right,,they were the highest flow design at the time.... and i never seen one break.. but the china knockoffs??? J U N K!!!!

Yep, my original looked like the one IDI Econoline posted on the left. I also have a USA made Robertshaw high flow that has been flawless so far. This is the second one. I bought two years ago and put the second one in last year when I overhauled the engine. Didn't know there was a cheap China Robertshaw on the shelves now, so I'll watch out. I used to buy them for all my stuff.

I originally installed the high flow Robertshaw when I installed a 100 GPM water pump in the '90s (stock are 75 GPM). The 100 GPM was damaged when I hit the deer in '02 and the body shop couldn't find another 100 GPM unit (neither could I last time I checked).

Yes... My fat fingers and very poor proof reading has failed me once again. The ford part number is as you posted...E5TZ-8575-C. Very sorry for the mistake too... Its like Forest Gump said... "I'm not a smart man" I really should learn to watch the cpu screen and not the keyboard when I'm posting....

OK, so what pic shows the type of t-stat that should be in our trucks? I've had a Robertshaw in mine since about '95 and definitely had no trouble.... hot or cold. Heck, I towed at 18.5 GCWR with it. I had a second one bought as a spare and installed that just recently. Anyway, this is all stuff I didn't know.
