Hey Heath,

I understand were you are coming from I check around at a lot of different places, how ever no one wanted to touch it. a lot of shops said the engine was nothing but trouble. The guy has a great name in the area which is an hour away from me. I explained to him I wanted this engine as close to spec as possible, take your time, if needed buy new tooling for the block. I feel pretty good about him and he asked me to talk with all of you about the right parts and what you all are having done.

Thanks again

Shops that said these IDI's were nothing but trouble typically have no experience with diesels and say stuff like that just to scare you off rather than admit they don't know how to work on them. Be sure to talk to Gary (icanfixall), Calvin (towcat), and Jim (PwrSmoke). Gary and Calvin live in the CA and can help with machine shop issues. Plus they all have good resources for all the spec's and tolerences the machine shop needs for these IDI's.

I had to take my heads to a different shop (2.5 hour drive one way) after the 1st shop dropped the ball big time. The heads are the biggest issue I've seen with machine shops and these IDI's. There really isn't room for error with them and if not done well, valves and pistons can meet each other in a violent and devastating fashion.

PM Heath he is more than willing to share all his info on his recent build as he has with me an he got the good stuff! At affordable price an I would put a waste gated turbo on there either a 093 factory ford turbo or a hx35 the Hx will require more work but has a higher performance without going crazy an from what your wanting to build or the willing for good internals it can handle it easily an give more power. Also a cam typ4 for what your doing would be best. Good low end bronco power from it lol. Almost forgot towcat on the board knows where to get gapless rings.

You can find gapless rings from total seal they run about $400 a set, Its a set with a standard top ring and a gapless second ring

I put gap less rings on a friends 6.2l block with 6.5 heads in a slightly hopped up 93 K3500 and at 3k miles his oil just looks like high mile gasser oil and he uses his truck for hotshot loads daily.

Can't say enough good about the rings, I try to advise others locally that it is a good idea.

Hi All,

Here is the update Heads are done. Sent Justin at R&D my old cam and 200.00 Bucks for the new cam. Sent the pistons to be Cryo and then send them to have the tops coated.

are there any offset bearings that could be used on our engines? then you could lower cr without milling pistons, custom rods, etc

Hi rhkcommander It is my understanding there are no bearings or rods you can buy. I am not an export in this however I never found any. I am not cutting down my pistons very much. My application does not require a huge drop.

Update on Total Seal Gap less rings. Talked with bob at Total Seal they do not make a ring set for the 6.9L They make a set for the 7.3. They will custom make the 2nd rings for 80 bucks and you need to send them the 2nd rings from your stock ring kit.

How much did you end up milling of the piston top? Also how come you have to send in the old rings?
