locking hood release?

My truck got broken into again on new years day, for no good reason. Since the last time it was broken into (April 2015), i have removed the batteries while it is parked behind a locked gate at my shop. With the hood released and up about an inch so the thieves will not have to break the window again. Well, not only are they stupid enough to break into the truck, they break off the hood release handle trying to unlatch an already open hood. Dopes.

My question: I have a replacement locking hood release and cable in a donor 4x4 out back, should I bother using it, or just get another regular hood release cable?

If you have a key for the locking hood release, or the facilities to rekey it, IMHO it couldn't hurt, although I don't know how much it will really help. If they broke the hood release handle, they may well break the locking mechanism as well...I don't remember how easy it is to do so; my old van had a locking hood release, but I never took it apart, and that was over a decade ago in any event.

My rule of thumb with thieves is that, if they want something badly enough, they're going to get it. The best anyone can hope to do is to slow them down enough make to make them decide it isn't worth it and/or make it so enough attention's brought to them for them to feel uncomfortable trying.

I left the hood open just to let them see that the batteries were gone. Maybe I need to leave it propped up some so it is more evident. I do have the key for the locking hood release.

Still need replacement parts for the driver's side wind wing (80-86). Will go to the parts yard after the rain stops.

This is why I quit locking my car when I was working in Baltimore. I got tired of replacing windows. If I ever find the SOB that broke the drivers window in January that I had to drive it home on the freeway in 20 degree weather, nobody else will have to worry about him.
