Light switch problem

when i pull the switch for my lights, the lights outside always come on, but inside the cab on the dash i have to fiddle with it sometimes to get those lights on. Plus, when i put my brights on, they work good for a few miles then all lights just shut off, i have no running lights or anything, they flicker on and off and eventually they just turn off until i take the brights off. But i can drive all day without brights. What is the problem?

These trucks eat headlight switches like candy, lots of current goes thru them unless you do the headlight relay mod.

Change the headlight switch for a short term fix, rewire the headlights (see tech articles) for a long term fix.

The little contact that touches the round spring thingy on the outside of the switch is bent and not making good contact, take it out and bend it back flat where it makes good contact with the spring and your problem should be solved,or replace it.

so where can i find this switch? do i have to pull the dash off?? how do i get to where i can replace the switch

If you are refering to the 85,If i remember correctly pull your headlight and windshield wiper knobs off,then pull the 2 or 3 screws out of the top of the gauge bezel ,then pull the top towards you and up and it will come off,now you need i think a 5/8 deep well socket to remove the nut from around the shaft on the head light switch, you should be able to reach under the dash and pull the HL switch down so you can unplug it from the harness, then there is a little round circular spring that should have a little finger that bends from the body of the switch over to it with a contact on the end of it , make sure that contact is making a good flat connection on that round spring thingy, if it is making good connection and you still have this problem then replace the switch , they are like $10 or $15 around here.
