I own a S1600 with a 6.9 and 5 speed. I'm looking into some gearing options to have something between 2nd and 3rd going up steep hills, and for a more pleasant cruising RPMs

I'd like to add a 3 speed brownie box, but I don't know much about them.

I'm looking at going used, not a new gearvendor or other option. I was thinking about stopping in at some of the logging truck mechanics in the area (Husum, WA) and see if they remember any International brownie boxes and where to get them.

can anyone point me into which auxilary trans i should be looking for? Did any s1600 come with one? or will I be building a custom mount and doing some driveline work.

Thanks

The ones I'm familiar with were in large trucks and had a 300rpm drop between gears. The shift pattern was a backwards "L". Down and left was under from there up and back down to the passengers seat was direct and forward against the dash was overdrive.

seems like the most popular one is the Spicer 5831.

I'm sure there are internationals that have brownie boxes (cement trucks and dump trucks). I'd love to find a donor to get the trans and driveshafts and perhaps it would all bolt right up.

I'm going to walk around some mid-heavy duty wrecking yards. Any good ones close to Husum? (Hood River, OR)

I found a spicer 6041 locally the im going to put in. With the 3 piece axel can i put it directly behind the trans and shorten the first piece? It would be pretty simple to bolt up there

Here are some photos of the brownie, the truck, and the driveline

From reading it seems if it's best for there to be a driveline between the main trans and the aux trans. I think i'll mount it where the carrier bearing currently is. I finally found an old truck with a brownie in it to look at.. and it looks like they have a slip yolk in between the brownie and the main trans. Is this necessary? Can someone point me in the right direction for some more installation info.
