Changed out my turn signal switch but didn't realize I should just take the wires out of the plug and I am back to the step of putting my ignition lock cylinder back in but there is a gear in there that looks like it needs to be lined up, how do I know if this is lined up correctly? Should the lock cylinder just slide on back in with no problems?

It does get off sometimes. If it is, it's the old "take it apart and put it back together" several times till you get it right. Steering columns are not much fun to work on.

More often than not if you put it back in off a little bit it will start and run fine but it will not turn backwards to accessory.
