I have done things like this but not with any diesels. My next question is would it be a bad thing if I put the main plate in a bead blaster? What would it do to it if anything?

By main plate, do you mean the front cover? If you do, then it would be fine. We used to do this at the shop I used to work at. It sure made them come out looking nice.
