I didn't know if this belonged in another thread so I just assume start this as a new one.

It is really easy to run an after market tach on an IDI. First you need the right aftermarket tach, the right one will have a switch that lets you select pulse imput or constant voltage input. Autometer makes a tach that has this and they are relatively cheap. Second you need to know what type of alternator you have. Now, if needed, and usually it is, you need a resistor. A few minutes on the phone with tech support will get you the info as to what size resistor you need. You will then attach the resistor to the input wire of the tach and then attach the resistor to the output of you alternator. ALL DONE. if you have a internally regulated alternator it isnt going to work, you need to convert to an external regulator. I have done it on 3 seperate occasions it works great and its cheaper than having to rig up a magnetic sensor.
