Non alpha means it is the j-33300 and not the newer j-33300a meter, right?

They work the same, but are shaped a little different.

One would still need the special wrench to adjust timing right? Is there anything else needed to use the meter to tune?

Search out icanfixall's timing thread,,, you don't have to have the $40 wrench but the 2 ip nut wrenches are kinda "a must"
As long as the gears are correct not a tooth off turning the pump is not fun but doable depends on the hardlines.

ill do a bit of digging to see if I can find it. I recall seeing a thread at one time regarding timing. Cant remember who it was written by. When I did my IP I lopped off half of a 9/16 (I think that's the size it was) wrench and managed to get my hand down in there to loosen/ tighten the nuts. Those lines aren't too friendly though..lol.
