I just went through this. Had to drop the front tank (easy).

Ditto- & get under there today and spray the nuts and bolts for the strap & retainer with PB Blaster, do it again tomorrow, and drop it Saturday. There are little retainer clips on the plastic fuel tube ends (if you are still stock) that keep them locked on the ends of the steel pickup and return lines coming out of the tank. The fuel lines come off MUCH easier if you pull the little clips first. :D Siphon as much fuel out as possible before you start and be prepared for the sending unit's lock ring to be an unrecognizable rusted mass+20 years of road dirt & crap. Steel brush & air pressure works well here.
Have fun!

Your float is sinking faster than it should. It's likely filled with fuel. I removed mine and bought just the float from Winchester Auto here. Quick fix and it worked.

No need to drop the tank unless you really want to. You can get the sending unit out by taking out the drive shaft first. Plenty of room and no need to jack up the truck.

Are you running out of fuel, or is the gauge showing empty? If you are running out of fuel, more than likely the shower head has dissolved (very common) and your pickup point is too high now. If the gauge is showing empty, a new float may do the trick. I have replaced both of mine, which were full of diesel.

Ah, just when I thought I could spread some of my limited knowledge, I got beat to it. Anywho, Knuckledragger explained it best - we were fortunate enough to where the shower heads in both tanks of my "new" truck were still intact, but one of the floats was dead, and since all the spare floats turned out to be duds as well my genius (not) boyfriend decided to make-shift a small plastic medicine bottle into a float - I don't remember which of the two tanks have that right now, but it works good. We did replace the questionable front "shower head" thingie with a rubber hose with a brass t-ee on the bottom, however the rear "shower head" thingie was still in good condition, so we just put a metal hose clamp around it to make sure it cannot separate from the steel line coming from the top of the tank...
