Front Seal Replacement

Well, I overheated the transmission and apparently ruined my front seal. I am going to drop it this weekend and have the front seal and bushing replaced by the trans shop. I would do it myself but I want the shop to make sure everything elso looks OK.

Does anyone have any pointers to drop the transmission? Any tricks anyone has learned etc...

I haven't droppped a transmission in 8 years and never the E40D.

My number 1 tip is to make sure and get a good transmission jack, try not to completely cheap out and get one that is gonna collapse on you. I think some places will even rent you a nice transmission jack for just a little bit of money. The only other tip I can think of is just take your time and make sure everything is unhooked and out of the way before you try sliding the transmission out of there.

These weigh around 300 lbs and the truck must be around 30 inches above the ground at the frame rails. No common floor jack will lift the truck that far. I ended up with a floor jack on a bunch of 2x8 and some blocks. Even then I needed more lift that the jack could give. I found if I turned the frony wheels and tilted the trans on the trans lift I could get it out and in.... Kinda like a high jumper getting over the high bar. At no time is the body ever completely over the bar. I wont do that job again thats for sure.... Brian at BTS jacks up the rear of the trucks and removes/installs them that way... On there backs like me... No lifts. He states the motor is at the correct abgle and the trans list slips in....

I just have a transmission jack from harbor freight and it works great for me and I have no suspension lift only the bigger tires to make the frame higher off the ground. I used to just lay on the ground and use my arms to lift the transmission in and out that way, this was a ZF5 but it was still too much weight and never felt all that great when doing it. After the time before last when I got the weight off balance while taking transmission out and hurt my arm and shoulder pretty good I bought a transmission jack and wish that I had done it years ago. Using the transmission jack that I have, to get the transmission out from under the frame I just have to pick up on the rear of it and tilt it a little and then the front of it is low enough to fit right out from under ther frame.

You will need to support the motor but... Don't place the supports under the oil pan. Use the pan rails for the jacking points and cut a 2x4 to fit. Then let off on the jack. If you use the bottom of the oil pan it will cruch it up against the oil pump pickup. Then your in deep stuff. The pan and pickup are about 1/4 inch differance from touching... Next time you change oil stick a small screw driver up the drain hole. It will really surprise you.

I'm getting a gasser that has suffered the same fate and I have been told that all of the E40d trannys should get this pump correction package, superior #K062 when replacing the bum front seal. I have heard from an expert not to use the bushing in the kit, but to use a factory one, the kit one isn't hard enough and requires modification of the bushing bore
This kit will solve the lube problem that resulted in the overheating.

before you do this, fill the trans full--and let the truck run--if it aint leaking, you didnt hurt the seal---------------just get a later larger ford trans cooler on there. its purty hard to hurt the ford factory seal. they are just way flexable. the aftermarket ones dont leak, as they are made of a diff material--my stroke one leaked, thought i hurt it. put on 1998 ford trans cooler--aint leaked since----------

the seal keeps leaking...I'm pulling the transmission now. I now know why i haven't bought a used vehicle in 8 years. I'm such a baby. I need to get to love the grease agian....

well, after a not so long debate I decided to get a rebuilt-to-1997-specs transmission from Jasper. It comes with a 75,000 mile/3 year warranty and has a torque converter and cooler with it. I am also getting a Derale 13091 filter and guage kit, duel guage pod and Summit 53501 trans cooler.

My transmission guy said to run "super s" fluid. what's this? and what do you guys recommend?

This weekend I am going to install transmission, along with the holley red fuel pump with metal lines...should only take a few hours, right?

You think a zf is heavy, try lifting a getrag with the bell housing on it.

Hope it all works out good for You, I wouldn't bid all My money on a Jasper warranty, they a really good at finding ways to make You pay for the things that go wrong.

The E4OD uses Mercon or Mercon V. Spend a few bucks more and go the synthetic route if you wish. As for "Super S" If it meets the specs then use it.
