There's an engine stand for sale with a 1,000 lb. capacity for $40 in my area. Would this be enough to support a 6.9 engine?

NO.
you will be playing with fire that makes your split handle look like child's play. rumour has it that one of these motrs in longblock form is 900lbs. I'd wager a fully dressed motor is more in the rang of 1500lbs. irregardless, they are freaking heavy. you need a motor stand that can handle 2k of weight if not more.

Yep, I've had cheap 1000 lb stands bend with inline 6 cylinder engines and had one break:eek: with a 454 cheby on it as soon as we took the hoist off it in my younger, dumber days.

Get a 2000 lb stand

I bought a 2000 lb stand from Cummins tools and it held the weight with no problem. The hardware that came with it looked a bit shady, so I got grade 8 hardware for it. I only paid around $80 or $90 for it. I do advise being extremely careful when turning the engine. Hope this helps.

a fully dressed 7.3 is 1250 IIRC, so a 6.9 would have to be at least 200 lbs less, seems like more....

I don't think so. The 6.9 has smaller pistons and will have thicker walls on the block so the block alone should weigh more.
