I looked at that '88 yest. The oil filler looks like a 6.9. I wonder if it is really a '87?:dunno That truck needs a lot of TLC. Yeah, the huge rusty square bar for a shifter is a little too redneck for me.:rotflmaoLOL

Could be... '88 was the year that the 7.3 was the only diesel option. In '89, you coul either get a 6.9 or a 7.3 engine.

Are you sure I thought 87 was the last year for the 6.9?

My dad's gf had a '89 with a stock 6.9 in it. From what I'm told, it had to be ordered from the factory that way to get a 6.9 in it. I was searching for anything to back up this statement, but I haven't so far. I may be wrong, but she bought her truck in late '89 from a Ford dealership and they claimed it was a NEW truck. The odometer only had about 100 miles on it when she bought it (I'm sure that was test drive mileage).

Engine [F-250 Optional] v-block. OHV. Eight-cylinder. Displacement 351 cid (5.8 liter).
Engine [F-350 Standard: F-250 HD 4x2 and F-350 Chassis-Cab 4x2 only]: Inline. OHV. Six-cylinder. Displacement: 300 cid (4.9 liter).
Engine [F-350 Standard: F-350 and F-250 HD 4x4, optional F-250 HD 4x2]: V-block. OHV. Eight-cylinder. Displacement: 351 cid (5.8 liter).
Engine [F-350 Optional]: V-block. OHV. Eight-cylinder. Diesel. Displacement: 444 cid (7.3 liter).
Engine [F-350 Standard: F-350 Supercab and F-Series Super Duty]: V-block. OHV. Eight-cylinder. Displacement: 460 cid (7.5 liter).

Of the 69,492 F-350's (and F-250 HDEs) built, 2.1% had an inline six-cylinder engine, 19.3% had a 5.9 liter v-8, 40.8% had a 7.3 liter diesel v-8, 37.8% had a 7.5 liter MFI v-8.

Paraphrasing...
F-350 Pickup:...The other major news this year was the slightly bored-out Navistar (International) diesel engine. Still normally aspirated, it now diplaced 7.3 liters (444 cid).....

I'm not saying that your wrong. I'm sure there are some instances us without money dont know about but.....2 years after ending the 6.9 and going to navistar instead of harvister for the engines, i doubt you could get the 6.9 from the factory in a 1989.

I have an early 87 and it's a 6.9. I'm pretty sure later in 87 they went to the 7.3....88 for sure is 7.3
