replacing a rear spring or even a whole rear leaf pack isn't that hard of a job.why just grab a torch,a grinder or whatever to cut the U-bolts,grab another spring or pack, and repair it right on spot.
your looking at just an hour or so with a couple guys and your good to go with the truck, provided you get the new hardware in advance.85 mile tow would cost more,or about the same as just fixing it in the first place.
why over complicate things? you guys act like you've never broken a rear leaf before.:D

Well guys, got her home. Kept it at about 60-75 and it drove pretty straight, but when its coming towards you, it looks like a srw on the right side and a fat drw on the left side. Oh well, but the truck body isnt twisted, looking at it you can tell there is equal space between the tires and the fender on the drivers side, but there is less space on the passenger side towards the back as the front.... if that makes sense. Any how, i got her home, now the fun starts :)

cookoo Yeah; when I said to drive like you had some sense, I was assuming that possibly you did.

I seldom drive that fast in a perfect vehicle.

You are fortunate to have escaped un-scathed.

This truck usually drives at 70 to 75 all the time by its previous owner. at least 65. I looked at it, drove it a bit and checked everything out. the previous owner drove it at that speed in that condition also. I am thinking you guys are thinking its in worse shape than it really is. I have sense, and i got home. saying i dont have sense aren't too nice of words. Anyways, the truck is home safe as am i, no need to dwell on the mistake i may have made. I definately appreciate the quick replies and the help. thank you

Well, the main leaf is what centers and holds the axle in place. With one side broken, and the truck pulling to the right all the time...this more than doubles the stress on the opposing side's main leaf. One bad pothole, emergency stop or swerve and it's all over.

I am not trying to come down o you, I just want to point out how dangerous something like this is. I have hauled wreckage from the ditch due to this same situation when I drove wrecker a few years back.

Anyways, you made it home and hopefully this sheds some light on the situation.

What are your plans for the truck now? New factory rear springs or gonna go with a lift?

I am thinking about replacing springs on both sides? and putting new shocks in. I could just replace one side, or just the main leaf, but i want this truck to be like new eventually. I want to work all the quirks out of it. Eventually a full restoration... hopefully. I kinda wanted to put a cummins in it, but a big dually that it is would still take quite a bit of power to get it moving like i want. I think i will get a dodge cummins when i want one. And a single cab at that so it is nice and light :) But yeah, i would like to get her all repainted and rust fixed. But it all takes money, which is something i dont have. :) but i have big plans for it. I am sure willing and glad to take advice or ideas about what i should do. Shoot me some ideas :)

Well, that all depends on what you want to do with it.

If it was me, I would be building for mileage. I plan on getting some DECENT mileage out of my 7.3 factory turbo, ZF and 3.55's I plan on installing.

But it sounds like you want power! An idi isn't a real powerhouse, but it will run forever, on cheap parts and not cause you a lot of grief. A cummins will put out a LOT of power...depending on what model and pump you have.

A p7100 on a 12V with minimal work will get you 300 - 350 at the flywheel. Then you can go REAL big and go with marine injectors, larger turbo, soem serious pump work, bigger intercooler, etc and go for 600 horsepower.....but you better have deep pockets!! lol

Personally, I would go with reliablilty, economy and leave the good looks for the prissy boys driving their daddy's truck to the burger king friday nights.

A well built turbo charged idi with a good pump and ip is more power than anyone needs, i was knocking down high 8 low 9 second 0-60 times with mine, and making 28psi of boost while blacking the road out with my turbo pump.

28 psi is pretty high... and my truck weighs like 8300 or so, getting that to move with any speed is pretty hard. My 93 turbo ext cab would smoke this 85, but then again this one is a dually and a crew cab, a lot heavier. But i wonder if with a moose pump, and bb injectors, it would beat the 93?? This 85 has a banks non wastegated turbo, but i really wish i could ride in or drive a truck with a moose pump. I know they make quite a bit more power, but i wouldnt like to think its gonna make a **** ton, and it only makes a little more. I just have no idea what to expect. I dont really want to put a whole lot more money in it if it isnt gonna make it really scoot. I also thought about a typ4 cam

Right... but even if it was 150 more horse, i just dont know what it would keep up with, or how much of a difference it would make. I know everyone has been really happy with it, but i just wanna know if it would keep up with a 7.3 stroke or a stock 1or 2g cummins... or if it will be still pretty slow. My 93 was only about a half a truck length behind an obs stroker and i had big tires on my truck. So i kinda just wanna know how much faster it will be. I guess i will have to try it to find it out.

My truck would walk all over any stock stroke that come along, and any idi should out run a 1st gen cummapart they only have 160 hp stockcookoo
